STORE LAMBS - WEDNESDAY 28TH JANUARY

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep. Forward: 1,411 Head comp: 1,367 Store Hoggs, 29 Inlamb Ewes, 15 Registered Blue Faced Leicesters. A large entry of store sheep for the time of year averaged £55.61 per head. Not many strong lambs on offer, best Lowland lambs to mid 70’s, best Mule also above £70, medium lambs in the £60’s and smaller lambs £50 to £55. In the entry were 450 Swaledale and Dalesbred lambs and these sold nicely away given the quality on offer.

CCM Auctions held their Mid Winter Sale of Blue Faced Leicester Females at Skipton on Wednesday. The Smearsett flock of The Booth Family of Old Hall Farm, Feizor were awarded the champion sheep prize by todays judge, Mr Thomas Walker of Appletreewick. The prize award was won by the first gimmer hogg out of their pen, sired by Gragareth E1 from David Lawson, and out of a ewe family containing a £12,000 ram sold to Marriforth, it found a new home at £500 in Ayrshire with Hugh Mongomerie. The same buyer also snapped up the highest priced sheep on the day, on this occasion from John Mason, Oddacres. A gimmer hogg by his John Park sire it sold for £580. Messrs Booth also made £500 of the third prize ewe, sired by Shafthill C1 and sold carrying triplets to a Mereoak lamb purchased in Hawes last Autumn, it sold to Kevin Wilson of Blubberhouses. Overall there was an 80% clearance rate.

Booths wrap up Skipton BFL females four-timer Skipton Auction Mart’s first registered sheep breed show and sale of 2015, the annual fixture for Blue Faced Leicester females, saw championship honours fall for an unprecedented fourth year in succession to the prolific Smearsett flock of WA&A Booth in North Craven. Rearing Calves to (62) £440 B&W av £71.95 Cont av £380.29 Native av £183.6 A strong show of rearing calves today, with mainly continentals on show with over half British Blue’s. With Suckler men in attendance trade was particularly strong for sweet British Blue heifers topping at £430 and 16 British Blue’s over £400. Strong show of calves needed for next week with buyers looking for strong well fleshed calves in all classes.

Forward: 512 head of cattle Comprising: 190 Young Feeding Bulls, 318 Bullocks & Heifers & 4 Breeding Cattle At CCM Auctions fortnightly cattle sale held on Wednesday at Skipton Mart there was a nice entry of 512 head. The sale included a special show of young feeding bulls, with judging undertaken by Mr Keith Bowes of York. There were some great bulls put before the judge and the awards were as shown below. The quality on offer was evident with British Blues averaging £1027.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs Forward: 1433 Head, Overall av £61.38 A mixed show of lambs forward today with small longer term lambs the dearest by a margin however bigger stronger store lambs were also good to sell with this week’s buoyant lamb trade helping no end. A show of 90 In Lamb ewes were well supported with them topping at £136 for some in lamb texel ewes from R Ainsworth, Padiham.

A much busier day than expected at CCM Skipton today given the atrocious weather over the weekend and early this morning. Good entries across the board and primestock prices stronger than expected.

Robert Crisp champion again at Skipton dairy opener A small show of just 16 dairy cattle was on parade at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening Craven Dairy Auction of 2015, quite possibly as a direct result of the continuing milk price upheaval affecting the sector and its knock-on effect on livestock trade.
