Primestock special sales well received at CCM Skipton Special primestock sales to cater for both vendors and buyers were staged between Christmas and the New Year at Skipton Auction Mart, on Thursday, December 28. A small, but select offering of prime cattle saw eight of the 13 under 30-month entries fall to the year’s principal buyer, Keelham Farm Shop, as co-owner James Robertshaw returned to re-stock the meat fridges for his two award-winning shops in Skipton and Thornton.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sheep Sale: 1,217 Store Lambs & 13 Blue Faced Leicester Females There was a larger entry of lambs this fortnight, but quality was very mixed with lambs generally smaller than the previous sale. Anything with strength and type was well bid for, whilst the long keep lambs were keenly sought with feeder finishers reporting a good supply of winter forage that needs eating. Stainbank heifer is Craven Dairy Auction champion Dairy cattle breeder Robin Jennings, who runs the Stainbank pedigree Holstein herd at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, took the champion’s rosette at Skipton Auction Mart’s second Craven Diary Auction of the year.

Rearing Calves to £450 (54) B&W av £80.83 Cont av £328.5 Native av £199.5 A strange trade for calves today with younger calves outstripping the older ones. Fred Houseman topped proceedings at £450 for one of his British Blue calves and all Blue Bulls averaging £384. Black and Whites were dearer today with certainly some better goods on sale and a stronger average at £80.83. A strong number of natives forward at handy money with John and Rob Marshall of Dacre topping proceedings with a Aberdeen Angus Bull at £285 and a mention for Chris Watson with his 3 week old Limousin x MRI bull at £365, it was a little cracker.

SKIPTON AUCTION MART MARKET REPORT – WEDNESDAY 19th JANUARY 2017 Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 719 head of cattle Comprising: 240 Young Feeding Bulls, 6 Beef Feeding Cows, 446 Bullocks & Heifers, & 27 Breeding Cattle. Similar ringside of buyers keen to fill pens and another excellent show of spring 2016 cattle met a very similar trade with once again a very high standard of entries. Pick of the runs was 8 blonde cross bulls march/april born from K&GJ Huck of Austwick which averaged £1178. In the bullocks and heifers again strong runs from W Mason and Son from Appletreewick with a packet of 8 at £1300 and David Sandham of Croxton topping at £1330 with a Charolais Bullock led the way in the prices. However young heifers with shape were on the end of a cracking trade today with Limousin and British Blue x Heifers regularly past £1000’s and almost £30 - £50 better than the New Year sale. Black and Whites certainly turning a corner with well framed bullocks up to £880 but a healthy average of £750 for all types. Next fortnight we look forward to the annual sale of bulling heifers with some regular consignors bringing runs of quality heifers perfect for running with the bull.

CALF SHOW - MONDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2017

Rearing Calves to £460 (81) B&W av £73.06 Cont av £357.49 Native av £212.45 A cracking calf by Chris and Thomas Harrison of Elslack took the top honours at the New Years Calf Show with a Simmental Bull. The calf which was 5 weeks old went on to sell to the Judge Simon Thompson of Driffield for £460. Fred Houseman had a cracking show of bulls on show today also with his 6 Bulls averaging £420 and his 3 British Blue heifers at £420, £410 and £380. Colin Whitelock of Gargrave was also on the receiving end of somke strong bidding with his young calves topping at £410.

SKIPTON AUCTION MART MARKET REPORT – WEDNESDAY 11th JANUARY 2017 Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 1,172 Head, Overall av £51.65 A good entry headage wise for the time of year, although very mixed in quality. Strong lambs look well bid for on the day and some vendors would be well advised to store lambs on Wednesday rather than try to push them through Monday market. Smaller lambs found a very good enquiry and would be in front of most vendors expectations on the day.
