WORKING SHEEP DOGS - FRIDAY 28TH OCTOBER 2016

Welsh and Irish lead the way at Skipton working dogs autumn highlight Welsh and Irish dogs, the latter in particular, had the pick of the trade at Skipton Auction Mart’s autumn working sheep dog sale, the final seasonal fixture of 2016. (Friday, October 28) The day’s top call of 5,800gns (£6,090) fell to a November, 2014, tri-coloured bitch, Llangwm Jen, from North Wales sheep farmer and dog trainer Sion Jones, who runs Cefn Eithin Sheep Dogs in Corwen.

Huck family claim Skipton suckled calves championship At Skipton Auction Mart’s annual autumn highlight for this year’s crop of suckled calves and over year store cattle with show potential, Austwick mother and son, Janet and James Huck, presented both the champion and reserve in the 2016-born suckled calf show class. (Wed, Oct 26) The champion was a Blonde heifer, out of a three-quarter Limousin cow, sired by Shapfell Esquire, which made £1,240 when selling to Thomson Bros, of Pickering. The Hucks’ reserve champion, another Blonde, sold for £1,180 to Edwards Farm Butchers in Burnley.

83 Rearing Calves & 18 Dairy Cattle: Craven Dairy Auction (18 head) A changeable sort of trade today with good heifers selling away well with Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk topping the day’s trade with his Pedigree heifer giving 32kg and from the Aireburn Miss America family went on to sell for £1850 to Stephen and Eddie Jeanes, Glusburn. Another heifer from Hesper Farm went on to sell for £1750, which had been calved just 10 days and giving 27kgs sold to Brian Blezard of Hothersall Hall Farm.

Another Lawson Jazz heifer hits the high notes at Craven Dairy Auction The Lawson family’s Newbirks pedigree Holstein herd at Mill Farm, Arthington, landed its fifth Craven Dairy Auction title of the year at Skipton Auction Mart’s main October Craven Dairy Auction.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs and Breeding Sheep Forward: 7,399 Head, Overall av £55.88 A great entry of lambs met with a strong trade as buyers were out on force looking for both short keep and long keep lambs. Still a few pens of good drawn gimmers in the sale, making prices £75 to £95, whilst the 4,300 Lowland bred lambs (Texel, Suff, Beltex, Charollais) saw strong and smart lowland bred stores on the day around £64-£72. Medium keep lambs were keenly contested being £60-£63 whilst long keep types were £54-£59. A few pens of small lambs in the 40’s.

DALESBRED SHEEP SALE Top price today was a shearling ram consigned by Messrs JT&J Kelsall of Clapham, which was bred by a Capstick tup out of a Haygarth bred ewe, which sold to Messrs R Jackson & Son of Horton in Ribblesdale for 260gns. Also matching 260gns was the second prize shearling ram from JM Wilson & Son of Beckwithshaw, which was sired by a homebred tup and sold to Martin Brown of Ramsgill. Champion was Trevor & Joe Stoneys shearling ram which was sired by a Huddleston ram and bred from a Longton bred ewe made 80gns. 84% clearance rate.

FORWARD: 2,602 Breeding Sheep & Gimmer Lambs. (2,380 Gimmer Lambs and 222 Dalesbred Sheep) CCM Auctions conducted their fourth fortnightly sale of Gimmer Lambs at Skipton on Wednesday where a good entry attracted a very busy ringside of customers keen for sheep late in the season. A few pens of Mules topped £100 with Kevin Wilson leading the sale at £108, Jack Berry t/a JH Throup at £100, other leading pens in the 90’s. Overall there were 2,152 Mules entered and they averaged £72.41 overall, NEMSA coming in at £74.09 (+£2.33) other Mules at £71.76 (+£1.00).

Skipton Dalesbred rams highlight produces 260gns joint top prices Joint top prices of 260gns and a clearance rate of 84% for the 50-plus ‘gentlemen’ on parade were seen at the annual Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association’s final seasonal show and sale of shearling and aged rams, and females, at Skipton Auction Mart.

26 Beef Breeding Cattle; Including 15 Pedigree Cattle and 11 Breeding Cattle Records were broken for females at the Autumn pedigree event with the “Millers Cote Nook herd” was dispersed. Leading price was Millers Cote Jezabell a Wilodge Fastrac Heifer scanned incalf to Netherhall Jackpot for Jan/feb which sold to Kevin Sunderland of Rossendale for 4200gns. Not far behind was Millers Cote Ivy a 2013 “Carmorn Dauphin” daughter sold with her Wilodge Goldcard heifer calf and carrying a service to Galileo which joined CCM’s field person Janet Sheard.

New record for females at Skipton beef breeding cattle feature A new record for females was set at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Autumn pedigree event for multi-breed beef breeding cattle, which featured a dispersal sale for the Miller family’s Millerscotenook Limousin herd at Cote Meadow Nook Farm, Water, Rossendale. (Wed, Oct 12)
