DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 14TH OCTOBER 2019

Rearing Calves to £395 (77) B&W av £61 Cont av £251 Native av £181 Calves were much better to sell this week with a healthy show of 77. Top price calf came from J&SA Lancaster with a Blue Bull at £395. 11 of the 16 Blue Bulls reaching over £300 with the whole average £326. Blue Heifers were good to sell but not reaching the prices of the bulls. Heifers topped at £250 and averaged £206. B&W calves averaged £61 topping at £135 for a lovely Friesian from G Pickersgill. Aberdeen Angus Bulls topped at £290 with an average of £230 whilst heifers topped at £240.

Ryder Herdwick dispersal a highlight of CCM Skipton Saturday sale Skipton Auction Mart’s latest monthly Saturday livestock collective fixture had the added interest of a dispersal sale of the complete Herdwick flock from Chris and Christine Ryder, of Scaife Hall Farm, Blubberhouses. (Oct 12) The flock was first established in 2013 and the Ryders had decided it was time to reduce their multi-breed livestock holding, consigning the remaining 36 head, which were all sold successfully, 11 older ewes falling to Brian Church, of Askwith, Otley, while ten more were claimed by Arncliffe’s Michael and Carol McKenzie.

Pedigree Charollais Females Messrs CW Marwood from the Foulrice Flock provided the Supreme Champion at the Autumn Sale of Charollais Female Sheep held on behalf of the British Charollais Sheep Society. The first prize shearling ewe shown throughout the summer is by Dalby Mount Aloe and was scanned inlamb to Cavick Up & Away selling to RJ&J Towers of Ingleton for 1200gns.

45 BREEDING CATTLE inc 17 PEDIGREE CATTLE The Autumn Pedigree Show & Sale was judged by Paul Baines. Leading Price in the bulls at the Autumn Pedigree Event was Queenshead Odin and Ampertaine Elgin son, a first calf bred from Millington Juliet. Born in March 2018 Odin was shown by Pat Varley of Queensbury and joined T Longton & Son of Quernmore for 1800gns. The first prize bull was the Limousin 2018 Elderberry Olden, Jupiter son, shown by E Blenkhorn & Son, son of Willitoft which made 1650gns to EW Gill & Sons Ltd of Sabden.

Limousins lead the way at CCM Skipton Autumn pedigree highlight Cattle took centre stage at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Autumn pedigree event, with another bumper bovine turnout of 583 head and a strong line-up of show classes right across the market for multi-breed beef breeding cattle, 2019-born suckled calves, 2018 store cattle with show potential, feeding cows, plus the first Autumn native store cattle sale. Kevin Huck strikes again at annual Skipton gimmer lambs highlight Skipton Auction Mart’s October gimmer lamb highlight produced an overall selling average for the 4,009-strong entry of £65.90 per head, a tidy increase on the previous year’s £59.39. (Tues, Oct 8) The popular annual fixture again featured four standalone breed shows for pens of ten Swaledale, North of England Mule, Dales Mule and Masham lambs. The Swaledale show class fell to Kevin Huck, of Knowle Bank Farm, Bordley, fresh from standing champion and claiming £2,200 top price at the previous evening’s annual Swaledales rams showcase.

Forward: 60 Registered Swaledale Rams A nice show of Swaledale Rams produced 7 sales at four figure prices and a good clearance rate with buyers keen to secure strong quality rams of all ages. It was the champion ram from Kevin Huck of Bordley that took the top price on the night of £2200. A homebred 3 shear by his Sealhouses ram out of Nattrass ewe it received keen bidding before being knocked to Messrs Hopkinson of Fairplace Farms, Cowling.

Jowetts claim first Skipton prime cattle championship There was a first-ever championship success at Skipton Auction Mart’s October prime cattle show for Stephen and Nichola Jowett, of Lower West Scholes Farm, Queensbury. (Mon, Oct 7) The couple secured the title with their first prize heifer, a black Limousin-cross-British Blue which had been shown on the regional show circuit all summer by their 19-year-old granddaughter, Fiona, picking up multiple rosettes, among them the Keighley Show championship.
