STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 28TH MARCH 2018

Forward: 599 head of cattle Comprising: 201 Young Feeding Bulls, 27 Beef Feeding Cows, 368 Bullocks & Heifers, & 3 Breeding Cattle. Feeding Bull trade very similar with a stronger entry and fewer high quality cattle in the entry. The few smaller end cattle were the best trade of the day whilst the top under 12 months bulls made £1100-£1225. Second draw heavier bulls a shade less on the fortnight.

DAIRY & CALVES - MONDAY 26TH MARCH 2018

Craven Dairy Auction (7 head) Mark Smith took the top honours in the dairy sale today with a cracking home bred heifer giving 32kg selling to John Howard of Heslaker Farm, Skipton for £2000. The 2nd prize heifer from the Newbirks herd of David, Claire and Suzy Lawson which was calved 10 days and 31 litres and sold to Ken Throup of Woofa Bank Farm, Silsden Moor for £1950. Despite being light on numbers a handy contingent of buyers was ringside for the milkers on offer.

Robert Towers field day at CCM Skipton Red Rose breeder claims double success in Easter prime lambs show Red Rose sheep farmer Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, near Lancaster, had a field day at Skipton Auction Mart, on Monday, when exhibiting both the champion and reserve champions at the headline Easter prime lambs show, along with the first prize pen of pairs at the opening show of ewes with lambs at foot. Roles reversed at latest Craven Dairy Auction Principal honours were reversed at the second March Craven Dairy Auction show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart, on Monday, March 26, when Mark Smith, of Rookery Farm, Winterburn, won the championship and the Lawson family, from Mill Farm, Arthington, the reserve championship.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 26TH MARCH 2018

705 Breeding Sheep The largest show this season sold away well considering the relative shortage of grass in places compared to other years. Gregory’s Butchers beefs up landmark 50th anniversary D Gregory & Sons Butchers in Bacup is beefing up its milestone 50th anniversary this month by selling meat from top prize-winning prime cattle, one a supreme champion. Founder Derek Gregory was at the ringside at Skipton Auction Mart’s March prime cattle show and sale to claim a double coup when paying close on £2,750 for both the title winner and the reserve champion.

Blues again to the fore at CCM Skipton young bull showcase British Blue-cross entries once more led the way when claiming both red rosettes for the second year running at Skipton Auction Mart’s Spring show and sale of young feeding bulls. Both were bred in the Yorkshire Dales by farmers who have tasted success at the annual highlight in past years. (Wed, March 14)

Rearing Calves to £460 B&W av £69.80 Cont av £333.48 Native av £203.33 Decent show of calves this morning with 75 landing through the door in total. A cracking buzz meant for a healthy trade with best continental bulls and heifers selling well with Graham Hayton topping at £460 for a Lim x bull with 19 British Blue bulls averaging £349 and topping at £420 twice for entries from Colin Whitelock, Gargrave and another from Church Farm Enterprises, Burton Leonard. Good heifers got away to a ready trade with Colin Whitelock again topping proceedings at £420 for a cracking Limousin cross heifer with 16 blue heifers averaging £330 and peaking at £390 and £380 twice from Church Farm Enterprises.
