BREEDING SHEEP - TUESDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER

Forward: 2,698 Head comp: 2,643 Ewes & Shearlings & 55 Pedigree Charollais CCM Auctions held their fortnightly sale of Gimmer Shearlings and Breeding Ewes at Skipton Mart on Tuesday. Breeding sheep attracted a good company of buyers and looked dearer than the previous sale. Thomas Binns of Downham presented a wonderful run of Mule Shearlings and 2 shear ewes and these set the tone for the day with the quality sorts receiving a good trade, whilst commercial types were also a better trade than the previous sale.

Ramsbottom ram champion at Skipton Charollais highlight Galtres rams were responsible for both the champion and reserve at the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial rams at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Sept 15) The title winner was the first prize shearling ram from Red Rose breeder Mark Worthington, who runs the Moss Side pedigree flock at Higher Moss, Ramsbottom. His January, 2014-born shearling, one of twins by the Netherton Highland Prince son, Galtres Lynz Unstoppable, was acquired by Mr Worthington, who established his flock in 1990 and currently has 30 breeding ewes, at last year’s early Builth Wells sale in Wales. He has also bred sons to 1,000gns.

Red Rose clean sweep at Skipton shearling gimmer show Both principal prize winners at Skipton Auction Mart’s second annual shearling gimmer show and sale were landing top honours at the fixture for the first time. (Tues, Sept 15). Thomas and Sheila Binns, of Hecklin Farm, Downham, Clitheroe, sent out the first prize pen of ten Mules, while David Lucas and Angela Nairey, of Bank Hey Farm, Blackburn, were responsible for the red rosette-winning pen of ten pure-bred Texels. The Binns’s victors were all acquired at the previous year’s Skipton NEMSA fixtures and returned to near their place of origin when sold for £162 per head to WT Dewhurst, of Waddington. They were also responsible for the second prize pen, which made £156 each.

Rearing Calves to £440 (85) B&W av £96.68 Cont av £362.33 Native av £320 Another handy show of calves today with 85 on offer with a large proportion of Black and Whites up for grabs, 47 in fact. A mixed bag of black and whites today with young calves making strong prices, and fleshy calves heading nicely towards £100 on onwards with an overall average of £96.68 topping at £180 for a fantastic bull from Whitakers of Bolton Abbey.

David Towell wraps up Skipton gimmer lamb hat-trick Pure-bred Texel gimmer lambs from Glusburn’s David Towell, of Upper Leys Farm, clinched championship honours for the third year in succession at Skipton Auction Mart’s big mid-September store lamb sale. (Wed, Sept 9) His pen of ten home-bred lambs, six by his own Wigglesworth Spellbound, acquired three years ago at Skipton’s Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Association annual pedigree highlight in September, the remainder by a home-bred ram, won the Continental class and retained the Chris Hagar Trophy. They then sold for £115 per head to regular Skipton showman Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, Lancaster.

Great Annual Show & Sale of North of England Mule Ewe Lambs onbehalf of NEMSA Members. Forward: 7,979 head at an overall average of £90.49 per head (-£9.39 down) CCM Auctions conducted their Opening Fortnightly Show and Sale of NEMSA members Mule Gimmer Lambs at Skipton Auction Mart, North Yorkshire on Tuesday. With the weather for once being kind in the run up to this years sale lambs were shown in fine bloom and were a credit to all concerned. Trade was better than most people anticipated and an overall average of £90.49 per head was recorded, a fall of just £9.39 on the year.

£250 per head top price at Skipton NEMSA opener Caton family clinch championship double Former Skipton branch chairman Kevin Wilson, of Blubberhouses, stole the show on price at the North of England Mule Sheep Association’s opening annual ewe lamb show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. Late in the day, Mr Wilson stepped into the ring with his fourth prize pen of 10s to see them snapped up for the leading per head call of £250 by Cumbrian buyer Brian Ridsdale, who trades as M Ridsdale & Son at Yew Tree Farm, Penrith.

Craven Dairy Auction (40 head) Exactly 40 Dairy Cattle forward with a wide variety of goods on offer from Dispersal Cows, Incalf Heifers, Top quality newly calved heifers to Heifer Calves. The variety of goods was met by a varied trade, which felt a lot harder than it looks. David Lawson’s pre sale Champion rightly took the top price of £2000 selling to regular Skipton supporters Alf and Andrew Townsend. Robin Jennings took the second top price at £1620 with his third prize heifer from his Stainbank herd.

Newbirks herd champion again at Craven Dairy Auction The Newbirks Holstein pedigree herd of the Lawson dairy farming family, of Mill Farm, Arthington, added another Craven Dairy Auction championship to its ever-mounting tally at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening September show and sale. (Mon, Sept 7) The reigning CCM Dairy Farmers of the Year secured a further title win with their first prize newly calven heifer, Newbirks Heliotrope 345, by the Semex sire, Curtismill Mr Sam, out of Heliotrope 325.

BELTEX SHEEP SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW & SALE OF PEDIGREE RAMS AND FEMALES Leading price at the annual show of Beltex Breeding Sheep held under the auspices of the Beltex Sheep Society was a shearling ram ‘Signature Waiter’ shown by George Cropper of the Hudhey flock in Baxenden . bred from a Glantre Norris ewe, Clary Naevus son joined Rob Lambert of Wigglesworth for 2500gns. Karen SHuttleworth of the Heber Park flock of Gargrave produced the Woodies Ringleader son Heber Park Well-fit, a shearling ram which took second prize in a strong class and sold to EJ&AM Fox of Symonton for 2000gns. The first prize shearling ram was Elizabeth McAllisters Artnagullion flock with a ram by Grahams Ringo selling to Michael Hall of Airton for 1600gns.
