Show report (Tuesday Evening)

2016 was the first year of a new format for The Craven Champions Show & Sale of Cattle with the prize show being held on the evening before sale. There were 48 head present for showing and judging was undertaken by Mr Robin Williamson of Hamsterley near Bishop Auckland, a successful producer of show cattle himself. With 10 classes to judge, his choice as supreme champion calf was the first prize British Blue cross Bullock consigned by The Walker Family of Brennand Farm, Dunsop Bridge, a farm which lie’s high in the hills above the Hodder Valley. The family who are regular consignors at the mart with their Store Cattle, Mule Gimmer Lambs and Swaledale draft Ewes retained the Jack Walker Trophy which the family gave to the sale for the first time in 2014. At Wednesday’s sale the bullock went on to make the highest price in sale when attracting bids from several interested parties, before being sold to Michael Wynne and his daughter Ellie from Matlock for £2,700. The Walker Family also had reserve champion male with a super dark blue and white bullock which was bought by Matt Keel for £1500, and reserve champion female with a chocolate coloured British Blue sired heifer that Rob Walker won with in the young handlers class purchased by The Shorrock of Cliviger for £1,800. Stepping up to the Female Championship with a homebred dark red Limousin cross heifer was Jonathan and Adam Townley of Clapham which had stood first in the un-haltered heifer class and this found a new home with The Jowett family of Queensbury. (A full list of results and prices below) Other leading prices on the day were £2,600 and £2,000 for the second and third prize British Blue Heifers from the Walker family whose run of 7 cattle averaged a wonderful £1,915, whilst Sheila Mason of Keasden Head at Clapham made £1,850 of a smart but young Blue heifer that didn’t win a ticket in the pre sale show

The Craven Champions show was included in the regular fortnightly sale of Store & Breeding Cattle for which another large show of 680 head were forward for sale. Young bulls were varied in quality but a strong list of prices either side of £1,100 for the smart and strong stuff could be produced. In the store section, outwith the show, commercial cattle were good to sell, with some of the shorter keep cattle showing a rise on the fortnight, whilst cattle rising a year old were keenly contested by a very busy ringside of buyers. The average price today for 469 Bullocks & Heifers was £1014.22
