4,076 Prime Sheep comprising 3,744 Prime Lambs, 332 Cast Ewes & Rams

Numbers still strong for the time of year with over 4,000 head penned and sold today. As expected, the handy weighted lambs were in comparison keenly sought on the day and more of these could easily have been sold. The heavier lambs however are becoming harder to place as the market place is over supplied. Quite a bit of trade for smart lambs today, Stephen Pepper topping the sale at 282p/kg with others at 245p and 242p. Mule lambs generally around the 150p to 160p for nice farm assured types and horned lambs a similar trade on the week. Cast sheep a touch sharper.

Sale as normal next week, but no sale Boxing Day (Mon 26th) then back to normal in the New Year with usual market on Monday 2nd Jan.

Good trade for calves today with first quality calves selling away well. Johnny Moon from Wigglesworth topped the days trade with a run of ten calves peaking at £400 and all his bulls £370+ today. Black and Whites were not quite as fiery as last week but still good to sell with again first quality knocking on into £60+ were as second quality were penalised.

Heifers also good to sell with a number of handy buyers bidding well for all strong continental types with native heifers a similar trade on the week.

Craven Dairy Auction (27 head)

A quality show turned out for the December Dairy sale and met a similar trade to the last fortnight with all types much improved. Calvert Bros of Crathorne took top honours from the Judge Andrew Townsend with a Home bred heifer that had calved a month and milking 34kg sold for the sale top price of £2000 to the Sowray Family of Bishop Thornton with the second highest price of the day also getting knocked down to the Sowray’s at £1820.  The heifer, home bred 30 litres from Tony Swires of Stainburn was first in the ring and sold away well.

Certainly more interest ringside with a buzz about the place this morning, certainly the appearance of BPS and a welcome (but arguably not a massive) increase in the milk price saw some sharp bidding and an air of a brighter horizon.

Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
