Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

The Farm Shops came out strong with an increased entry at the weekly primestock sale. Top call was a 570kg British Blue cross heifer from Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield which headed up the leading gross prices at £1428 or 250.5p/kg when selling to Keelham Farm Shop, Skipton. Robertshaws Farm Shop headed the leading p/kg prices with a 256.5p purchase for a 515kg British Blue cross heifer from Mesrs RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton which grossed up to £1321. The leading gross steer was another from the Threshfield farm of Mesrs Kitching, this time a 590kg Limousin cross which joined Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster for £1389 or 235.5p/kg. A good entry and warm trade as buyers begin to fill fridges in the run up to Christmas.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cows were a much sharper trade as the Autumn flush has probably cleared and numbers tighten. Still very few cattle with meat but trade is also assisted by feeders looking for cattle to market in the New Year.

4,043 Prime Sheep comprising 3,780 Prime Lamb, 263 Cast Ewes & Rams

Following last weeks excellent trade it was expected that numbers would increase sharply in the live marts this week, as this medium of selling is clearly the strongest way of trading prime lambs at the moment. There were 3,772 head forward for sale, and these recorded an SQQ of 193.8p (SQQ is those weighing 25kg to 45.5kg) whilst the overall average was 185.6p, including 1770 lambs weighing 46kg or more. This average includes a full spectrum of both Farm Assured and Non Farm Assured lambs of all weights and qualities.
The smartest end were an excellent trade, with James Garth & Son of Keasden topping the mart at £119 per head for 43kg at 276.7p/kg selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Garth sold further lambs at £112 (43kg 260.5p) and £111 (42kg at 264.3p) £110 (42kg 261.9p) £104 (42kg at 247.6p). Mike Allen from Staithes, Whitby had lambs at £114 on two occasions both selling to Hartshead Meat Co, and Messrs Fox Farms from Clitheroe also had lambs at £114 selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. Fox Farms sold additional pens at £108 and £106. HB Atkinson from Harrogate sold Beltex at £114 £112.50 and £109 twice, David Asquith from Otley sold Continentals to £110.50, JA&JH Hewetson from Bank Newton were up to £109, J&G Huck from Hubberholme also to £109, RG Church Ltd from Otley to £108, S&P Scrivin from Elslack, Skipton to £106. The good sorts were generally 220p to 250p and the smartest end 250p to 270p.
Lowland lambs in the 38kg to 43kg were short of requirements and found a strong following all day, 44kg to 46kg found regular buyers keen and were £2 to £3 dearer on the week, a straight commercial lamb 47kg to 50kg were mid to late £80’s, nice lambs in this weight range around £90 and better end in the 90’s. Heavies in the mid 50kg weight area were anywhere from around £90 to £100. Hill bred lambs took another nice lift with good Mule and Masham Wethers generally £32 to £36 over the weight, top sale price of £96 per head for Mule Wethers from Jack Berry t/a JH Throup, Lower House purchased by Swaledale Foods. Decent Continentals from Horned ewes selling well today as well. The butchers and farm shops were all in good buying form with Countrystyle Meats, Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, Keelham Farmshop in Skipton and John Kearns in Shipley in addition to Kendalls Butchers and Swaledale Foods all getting on the scoresheet today.
Ewes were a nice trade, strong sorts to £128.50 from D Hargreaves and £121.50 from JA&JH Hewetson, plenty of nice Continentals £85 to £100, better Mules touching £70, Best Swales to £58.50 and Dalesbred to £54.50.
