Cull Cow Prices

A reduced entry of cast cattle got away at a reasonable trade with one factory buyer absent but an extra buyer at the ringside. Best dairies 2-5p back on the week but the steaking and plain cattle a shade firmer. An average show of beef cross cows with a highlight a fed Galloway from Tom Boothman.

3,984 Prime Sheep

Lamb numbers remaining constant, with another 3673 head penned for sale today in a show of 3984 sheep altogether. The overall quality of the show was not just as good today but the quality end of the lambs were every bit as good to sell, 6 pens over 250p and 17 pens over 220p. Leading the way at 266.7p and 265p was Alaistair Jenkinson from Langbar, followed up at 262.2p and 252.6p by Robert Fielden of Todmorden. Richard Crabtree of Clifton topped his run at 257.5p, whilst Jim and Christine Scrivin from Elslack made 251.2p. Others making over 240p were George Sunderland from Cragg Vale, Ellis Bros from Addingham Moorside and Samantha Asquith from Otley.
In the lump top price was £112 and £106 from Alaistair Jenkinson, £109 and £106 from James Garth & Son of Keasden, Samantha Asquith £104, Chris and Tom Heseltine from Bolton Abbey £104, Tony Kiernan of Longridge £104, Richard Crabtree of Clifton at £103, Jim and Christine Scrivin £103 and Ellis Bros £102.
The next grade of nice butchers lambs and local wholesale lambs were 200p to 220p, even for some smart heavy lambs. Handy weight lambs were a good trade all day as the trade looks for nice selling lambs that aren’t over fat, whilst a leaner heavy commercial lamb was a decent trade at 160p to 170p, but anything a little “thicker” was 155p to 160p.
More Mules getting about, the nice lambs in the 150’s.

** VENDORS PLEASE NOTE** - Lambs MUST be presented clean, all lambs should at the very least be clean behind, dirty lambs must be crutched before being presented at market. It is also advised that the smarter end of Continental lambs are better off if you belly clip them at home too before sale.

Black and white calves saw the trade of the day today with an overall average of £117.47 and topping twice at £165 for some cracking bulls from RM Spence. Of the 19 B&W Bulls 12 were over £100 with some fierce competition on  30 day + calves right through the sale.

A couple of fresh bidders on the continentals saw an improved trade for the continentals with a better quality show of calves contributing to the average also. The Wright family of Kirk Syke took the top bid for their cracking British Blue bull which sold for £420 to Andrew Houseman of Dacre. Limousin bulls were forward in healthy numbers this morning with Allan Throup and Pickersgill Bros seeing their consignments top at £400 for 5 week old bulls.

In the heifers it was a sweet heifer from Graham Hayton which caught the eye of many bidders with his Limousin Heifer selling for £400 TO Paul Drinkall, Gargrave.
