Countrystyle Butchers were out of the starting blocks early to buy the first two cattle into the ring at the two leading pence/kg prices of the sale at 247.5p and 246.5p, both Limousin cross heifers for CD&RF Kitching which grossed up at £1361 and £1282.

Cast cattle remain a solid trade with heavy dairies to 116.5p and a young British Blue cow at 186.5p. Plenty of cows straight out of the parlour on TMR 105p to 113p.

Prime Hoggs

Less sheep about today, but the overall average was up 5p to stand at 181p/kg (SQQ Comparison 189p)

Smart lambs were forward in less numbers with the better end generally 250p to 280p. Top of 295.8p/kg (36kg at £106.50) from Paul Simpson of Wigglesworth, followed by 286p 281p 278p and 265p for Beltex pens from Kevin Marshall of Darley. Andrew Phillips of Burton Leonard presented a wonderful run of Beltex crosses, the best of which were 277p. Henry Atkinson had a good run of Beltex to op at 277p. M Taylor & Son of Higher Brayshaw, Rathmell had top price lambs at £118 closely followed by neighbours T&C Robinson of Middle Brayshaw at £117.

Commercial Lowland Lambs were again a sharp trade with last weeks prices easily upheld, 190p to 205p for the right weights.

Heavy Lowland lambs (46kg to 52kg) saw a sharper trade on the week, back up to prices seen two weeks ago, this weight bracket averaging 169p this week. 

Hill bred were dearer on the week for the prime weights, Steve Dorey topped the hill section at 188.1p or £82 for Mules, whilst top price horned lambs were 181p from Joe Drinkall or £81 from Jimmy Baines.

Average price for ewes of £65, with heavier ewes again receiving a decent following.

Breeding Sheep

A good show of sheep with lambs at foot for the weekly sale with everything £5 to £10 per life dearer.

James & Deborah Ogden had another great run of sheep, 2 pens of 3 crop Mule Ewes with twin at £210 and £205 the outfit, but it was 3 pens of 3 and 4 crop Texels with Beltexs that topped the sale at £220 and £215 twice. Richard Umplebys run topped at £205 as did Nick Dalbys.

Rearing Calves to £410 X2 (78)

A few calves around today with young continental calves a cracking trade right through the day. Chris Watson was on the end of a good trade for his Flekvieh x calves with 10 averaging £228 and topping at £260. Church Farm Enterprises took the top call at £410 x2 for two of his sweet British Blue bulls. Johnny Moon of Wigglesworth topped the heifers at £370 for cracker of a dark heifer.

 

Native calves were out in good numbers today with 11 young Hereford bull calves averaging £200 and topping at £220 from JC Marshall, Dacre. Aberdeen Angus average £208 and topped at £245 from JR&MJ Moon.

Craven Dairy Auction (13 head)

 All the cattle that were forward today were with a mixed bag of goods on offers. 1st rate heifers got away well with Tony and James Swires of Stainburn topping proceedings with their home bred heifer. The heifer a “Miresdale Finest” daughter was calved 10 days and giving 27 litres, which went on to sell for the sale high of £2020 to Mark Goodall of Tong

 

2nd rate heifers also got away well with some average goods bid fiercely for, with many reaching the early teens.
