2,191 Prime Sheep comprising 1,849 Spring Lamb & 342 Cast Ewes & Rams

Lamb numbers a bit tighter today than expected, but this certainly helped trade along the way with prices generally firmer on the week. A&K Kiernan from Preston had a nice consignment of ¾ bred lambs and it was from these that the top price head and per kilo was found, weighing 43kg selling for £117 per head or 272p/kg they were purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. The same buyer vendor combination also accounted for lambs at £115 (45kg 255p), whilst TR Thwaite & Son Horton in Craven sold lambs at £113 purchased by Kendalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate. R&E Pollard of Colne made £112 of Texels purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley, whilst GR&SM Wearmouth Glusburn also made £112 per head purchased by Worsley Wholesale Meats. Mr Kiernan made £110 of another pen and closely followed by KA&HL Fawcett & Son Barden at £109 for Texels. Per Kilo, A&K Kiernan led the way at 272p others at 256p 255p and 240p, whilst E Pennock & Son Bolton Abbey had a great pen at 257p. Heavy lambs 46kg to 52kg were up 5p on average on the week with customers definitely keener. Overall just shy of 193p.

The July calf show saw a fantastic amount of high quality calves penned for sale this morning with a very solid trade received throughout the sale. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Richard Umpleby of Killinghall and went about his quickly and thoroughly. His Champion and Reserve were both tremendous British Blue calves from Shaun Sowray of Bishop Thornton. Both calves sired by the dependable AI sire Kracker saw the bull calf just pip the heifer to the top spot, however at sale time nothing could split them with both calves selling for £440.

The a strong trade throughout the sale meant for many pleased faces leaving the ring, on the whole calves would be slightly younger than previous show weeks, despite this those really sweet shapey calves could still break the £400 barrier. Best continental heifers could more than keep up with their male counterparts with the highest price calf of the day again from Sowray’s, sired by AI Sire Jack she went on to sell for £465 and its mate £440.

Native calves wouldn’t see any records broken for best calves however young calves were a pleasure to sell with both bulls and heifers 3 – 4 weeks of age regularly £140 -£150. A mixed show of Dairy Bull calves saw a straight trade. By far the best was a fleshy calf from Ralph Guy or Earby who saw his calf reach £165.
