5,074 Prime Sheep

A very large show of sheep were presented for sale today and trade was slightly sharper on the week as morning markets countrywide struggled for numbers due to the poor weather. Buyers turned out in force and were keen for sheep and the increased show had the desired effect. All classes again sold well, with heavy lambs and hill lambs finding more favour than of late and there was over 1,000 hill bred lambs in the entry with Mules averaging 144p, whilst good finished horned wethers are beginning to rise in price too. The smart sorts were keenly contested, Martin Brown of Leyburn presenting a wonderful run of lambs topping the sale at £106, £100, £99 and £96 twice, whilst Hannah Brown also had £100 for a pen of Beltex, also topping the sale at 271p. Commercial lambs of 40-43kg found a very good following, generally 2p-3pkg dearer on the week.

A big show of ewes were present and are starting to see an improved trade again as number tighten countrywide.
