Prime Sheep

Lamb numbers once again increasing sharply, but a very pleasing average of 256.8p/kg was recorded for 1,118 head. As predicted, anything a bit heavier and well finished was a good trade on the day, and the 46kg to 52kg bracket was again the best average showing an average of 269.5p/kg. It was from this bracket that the top price lambs came from, John Turner of Ellenber had continental crosses weighing 47kg and making £154 each to Vivers Scotlamb. Vivers also secured the next highest price of £151 from Richard Crabtree of Otley. John Turner was back again selling lambs at £149 to J&E Medcalf & Sons, and £145 to J Penny & Sons, Rawdon. J Penny & Sons also purchased lambs at £145 from A Sharp, Blackburn, and 2 pens at £143, first from Donald Sunderland, Bramham House and then from A&P Fletcher, Oldham. Swaledale Foods were in at £148 for lambs from Mark evans of Steeton and then £143 for Texels from John Turner.
On a Pence Per Kilo basis, it was Richard Crabtree who dominated the sale with pens at 335p 326p 323p 319p 303p all to Vivers Scotlamb, and a further 2 pens at 300p to Countrystyle Meat Farmshop & Restaurant of Lancaster. Vivers purchased other highest priced lambs at 327p form John Turner, 314p from Dave & Laura Coar, Darwen, 309p from Ellis Bros, 300p Tom Walmsley and 300p Luke Mellin. Andrew Atkinson got on the score sheet with lambs at 326p from Tony Kiernan, Hamlets Butchers had lambs at 302p form Peter Dakin, Bolton by Bowland. Other smarter bred lambs were 270p to 300p, and there were plenty of other nice lambs selling at £130 to £140.
The next grade of lambs, mainly those either twice crosses or with a bit more weight on board (40kg to 45kg) were generally 250p to 265p, whilst a plainer or under finished first cross sort was 225p to 240p.

Still a few hoggs and teeth up sheep about, some good sorts over 200p and up above £100, up to £123 from Aimee Beresford of Halton West.

A lighter show of ewes were a sharp trade, Lowland sheep up to £115.50 for Texels from Peter Dakin of Bolton by Bowland, whilst horned ewes saw good Swaledales to £77.50 from Richard Grange, Beamsley and an overall selling average of £70.58 for the whole sale.

Continental calves were a very healthy trade today with both bulls and heifers making heady prices. Norman Fort of Silsden had a tremendous British Blue bull calf today which sailed to £450 with no fewer than 7 different vendors over £400 in the Blue Bull section. Continental heifers were a similar story with a British Blue average of £398 and topping twice at £420 for a brace from Church Farm Enterprises.

Native calves were in short supply and were very highly sought after with a tremendous Aberdeen Angus bull from JP&KE Hartley reaching £415 and Heifers from Hartley’s again and C Watson, Horton in Craven at £300 twice. In the Black and Whites, a few plainer calves pulled the average but some fleshy calves from Chris Harrison of Elslack topped at £115 for 3 week old calves.
