1,943 Prime Sheep

A great show of sheep with over 1,000 new season lambs penned for sale and a trade that was sharper than anticipated by most attending todays sale. The monthly prize show was very well supported, with this month’s champions chosen by Martin McIntyre of Bainbridge and being consigned by Robert Towers of Farleton, Lancaster. His 44kg lambs by a Beltex ram out of Charollais ewes scales 46kg and sold for £107 per head to James Robertshaw of Keelham Farm Shop.

Hogg numbers about done for the season now and anything with a bit of meat was ok to sell, whilst a very large show of cast ewes and rams were probably just a shade easier on the week.

41 Rearing Calves to £545

B&W av £111 Cont av £419.7 Native av £263.7

A Fantastic trade for rearing calves today with calves in serious demand, anything well fleshed and looking good were unstoppable. The black and white trade was exceptional for the best calves with fleshy holsteins time after time well into £110 to £145 and topping at £170 for the third calf in the ring from Chris Harrison, Elslack and the same price for a sweet calf from Geoff and Margaret Booth, Lothersdale. They didn’t have to be old either with main of the top prices being 24 days to 1mth and 15 days old.

Two strong runs of calves from John Marshall at Monk Ings and Fred Houseman, Burton Leonard were well supported with mainly blues these two vendors had some tremendous prices with fred topping the bulls at £545 and John the heifers at £480.

Natives were hard to stop also with 1 ½ Mth old calves touching mid £350’s and averaging £263 right through.

Trade looks set to continue with buyers adamant not to leave empty handed, farmers looking for Suckler replacements were also out in force adding further upward pressure to prices. Be sure to remember we have a vibrant Calf, Cast Cow and Dairy ring allowing you to sell and buy everything you require on one day.
