Prime Sheep

A similar show of sheep and a similar average to last week, overall average of 182p with an SQQ of 189p. Again the handyweight lambs were keenly contested with all buyers operating well, but the very heavy sheep are no dearer, with numbers of these plentiful.

Smart lambs were dearer today and a good show of them too, with nearly 200 lambs selling for £100 or more. Andrew Phillips from Burton Leonard had a cracking run of lambs which topped the sale at £118 on two occasions and had further pens at £117 £113 £112 £110 £109 and £108 twice, his run of 52 lambs averaging £107.37. Ian Marsden from Hoylandswaine showed his usual good type of lambs and his trailer full topped at £113, whilst Paul Simpson of Wigglesworth had a great run of lambs to top at £110 or 289.5p/kg, with others at 278p 267p 263p 257p. Taylor Bros made 269.2p of a pen, Andrew Phillips 264.1p and Kevin Marshall of Darley topped at 260.0p.

Commercial Lowland Lambs could be spilt into two categories. The 37-43kg sheep were dearer, a nice 44kg to 46kg would also be a shade dearer, with the Heavy Lowland lambs (46kg to 52kg) showing a 3p rise on the week to 172p, but very heavy sheep just remain a similar trade.

Hill bred lambs saw some good meated runs, best of the Mules 175p to 178p which was similar on the week, but horned lambs were 5p to 10p/kg dearer.

A good show of strong ewes today, best of the heavy ewes at £134.50, others around the £120 mark. Best Mules £70-£75 up to £79.50, and best Horned ewes up to £64.50 for Dalesbreds from Johny Carr, Askwith.

Rearing Calves to £405 X2

B&W av £75.46 Cont av £347.45 Native av £177.83

A handy show of calves forward today with a strong trade for most goods. Black and Whites were £15 up on the week as a result partly to a better show but also a couple of extra faces ringside. Continental bulls and heifers were a dearer also with a few handy bidders on heifers as well as bulls.

Fred Houseman topped the day, with two bulls at £405 and Colin Whitelock at £400, with arguably no price difference to the best heifers  on show today. Shaun Sowray had a Limouisn heifer at £400 with Houseman and Whitelock at £380 and £370 respectively. Continental heifers right through averaged £344 and Blue bulls averaging £375 on a non-show week.
