Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A nice run of Prime Cattle penned for sale today and a full line up of purchasers. Top price of the day went to Simon Bennet with a 595kg Limousin heifer adding up to £1472 selling to W Rathmell for Brayton Farmshop. Countrystyle Meats Farmshop and Restaurant of Lancaster helped themselves to 4 of the cattle on offer including the 2nd and 3rd highest grossing animals at £1406 and £1395 from The Critchley Family of Preston, whilst also having another from the same home at 262.5p which was the highest price per kilo overall. Keelham Farm Shop in Skipton purchased 4 animals inc the highest priced Charollais Steer from CD&RF Kitching at £1354, Stanforths Butchers from Skipton took home the top price B.Blue heifer at £1342 from The Kitchings amongst their 3 purchases, and Robertshaws Farmshop of Thornton purchased the highest price Limousin steer at £1388 amongst other purchases. Ellison’s Butchers of Cullingworth took home the highest price lightweight steer at 240.5p from S Bennett, and the highest price lightweight heifer at 241.5p from Pheonix Grain Co.

A nice trade for cast and feeding cows with 9 buyers competing ringside. Best beef cows to £1235 from John Cowperthwaite of Eldroth, whilst a very mixed selection of dairies saw the better end 100p to 113p, medium sorts in the 80’s and 90’s. A solid average of 92.2p for the mixed selection of dairies and 109.8p for the Beef crosses.

3,246 Prime Sheep comprising 2852 Prime Lamb, 394 Cast Ewes & Rams

Sheep a better trade than anticipated today, with an overall average of 165.8p/kg. Heavies and fed lambs of all weights were a sharp trade and a full lineup of buyers made for a good competitive sale. Heavy lambs regularly in the £80’s and £90’s, Best heavies into the £100’s. Tops per head and per kilo at £117 for 48kg Beltex, 248p, from Kevin Huck of Bordley. N&AD Boynton of Ripon topping at £107 and £99, and D Halliday Sowerby Bridge topping at £101 and £99. Ellis Bros £98 and Tony Kiernan £97. Simon Spensley of Highgate up at £96. Handyweight lambs were 170p to 180p for straight fed types, and 185 to 210p for something a bit smarter. Grass fed lambs still just 150p to 160p.

Cast sheep were harder work as trade just slips a touch everywhere, and prices generally £5 to £10 back.

A solid show of calves for this Monday’s sale considering Pateley Show day with a straight run of calves. Best calves came from Joss Lancaster of Horton In Craven with his bulls topping the sale £385 and £375. A good show native calves found some solid prices topping £280 for a strong bull from JM Smith, Carleton at £280.

 

NB: Dairy Sale next week with the possibility of a couple of Holstein Stock Bulls.
