3,500 Prime & Cast Sheep

With sheep numbers scarce at morning markets countrywide and the presence of an additional large throughput processer at the ringside today in Skipton drawn by the usual good entry, trade was much sharper than we had anticipated given the low prices seen towards the end of last week. The overall average was 7p/kg up on the week to stand at 153p, with handyweight lambs especially good to sell. The smart Beltex types could get to either side of 200p whilst good ¾ bred Texels were around 175p to 180p. A commercial handyweight lambs was 150p to 160p. Heavier lambs (44kg upwards) also took a good lift generally being £4 to £5 a piece dearer on the week.

A big show of ewes contained a large proportion of fresh weaned ewes and these look handy priced for feeding orders.

A handy show of calves this morning with 50 good calves forward. Black and Whites were still good to sell with Angus Dean of Threshfield presenting high quality run, however it was Michael Heron who topped with a pure Friesian at £220.

Continentals were also a good trade with David Smith of Sutton in Craven topping with a strong Blue Bull selling for £470. Other noted vendors were Richard Spence, John Rushton , Fred Houseman and Calvert’s of West Marton making the average £409.55.

Blue heifers were also a good trade with Fred Houseman topping with Dean’s and Calverts taking the heifer average to £350.

Natives had the trade of the day with seasonal buyer coming back into gear with Angus bulls averaging £330 and Angus Heifers £275. More wanted with the trade this strong especially considering their ages.

Strong numbers expected to continue through the next 8-10 weeks so keep those good calves coming.
