Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A very good trade for a small entry of clean cattle. Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster secured the top gross a 590kg Limousin cross heifer at £1478 or 250.5p/kg from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield and the highest priced steer a 560kg Limousin cross form RT&J Critchley & Sons of Hutton for 260.5p/kg or £1459. Amongst the high prices was George Cropper  of Sandersons Butchers in Baxenden who bought the handy weighted 510kg top price, a Limousin cross heifer at 263.5p/kg or £1344 from RT&J Critchley & Sons. The highest gross priced steer also came from CD&RF Kitching, another Limousin weighing 585kg bought by Barkers Yorkshire Butchers for £1459 or 249.5p/kg.

Next week is the July Primestock Show with prizes for top p/kg, top gross, top priced and heaviest cast cows.

Cull Cow Prices

No let up in the strength of the cast cow trade with light shows and plenty of grass on feeders farms. A few worn types pull the average back but any dairy carrying meat was 128p and upwards. Next week is July prime show.

2,792 Prime Sheep comprising 2310 Spring Lambs, 37 Prime Hoggs inc 22 Mature Sheep, 445 Cast Ewes & Rams

 

Almost 600 extra lambs forward this week, with a total of 2310 head penned for sale, and a super overall average of 234.1p/kg or £96.80 per head. Weight is paying well at the moment with the 46kg to 52kg range averaging 242.8p/kg and the main body of lambs forward were in the 36kg to 45kg range levelling at 233.5p.kg.
Today 10 lots of lambs sold for above £130 per head, peaking at £134 on three occasions, first from RKR Wood, Stokesley selling to Knavesmire Butchers in York, then from T&E Clayton, Boston Spa selling to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton Bradford, and finally from JC&PS Turner, Draughton to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate. Robertshaws then secured 3 pens all at £133 per head, coming form RH&MR Ireland, Whalley, Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside and from J&F Nutter in Hurst Green. Hartsheads Meat Co, Mossley were securing quality lambs again from Skipton with purchases at £133 from R Emmott, Silsden, £133 from JP&KE Hartley of Bolton Abbey, and £132 from TA Robinson, Dilworth, Longridge. Kendalls completed their purchases with lambs at £132 from MJ Spensley of Elslack.
Per kilo there were 5 pens at 300p or more, tops a pen of 7 at 39kg from Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside making 315p or £123 to Hartshead Meat Co, the same combination responsible for a pen at 300p. Knavesmire Butchers purchased lambs at 314p from DJ Grassam of Stockeld Park, and at 213p from RH&MR Ireland of Whalley. Annabelle Sugden from Laycock made 305p of lambs selling to Vivers Scotlamb, Dornocktown.
Overall the trade was very similar to last week, best lambs 260p plus, next grade 230p to 250’s, and commercial lambs 215p to 230p. Heavy Lowland lambs 46kg to 52kg average £114.01 per head. Also, several lots of nicely fleshed Mule wethers forward now and finding a ready market, sample prices including 38kg £85 (Snowhill), 34kg £75 (Church End Farm), 40kg £85 (Mill House) 41kg £91 (Cragg House) 41kg £89 (Berwick Intake) with plenty of buyers ringside for them.
Like I did last week, today I can report a wide range of weights presented for sale, from a pen of 38 head of machine reared Texels weighing 30kg selling at £69, to 57kg Continentals making £132 each, and all weights and grades in between. Ewes a very good trade today. There were over 100 horned ewes and 72 mules included in the 445 on offer today. Cont ewes sold very similar on the week with best bred good weighted ewes selling to £132.50 from RW&B Chapman, with the best repeatedly over £120. Heavy crossed ewes reaching over £100 with the lighter Cont x ewes around the £80 with some grazing, plain sorts and lighter ewes in the £70s generally. Plain Mules £40+ with good meat £70+ and fat the same price. Top priced Mules at £76.60 W&M Bland, Kirkby Malham. Heavy Suffolks well sold again with price generally £100-£110 with a top of £113.50 JC&PS Turner, Draughton. Herdwicks sold to £63.50. Swale ewes sold to an audience of both grazing orders along with those for processing. Meated ewes £55-£58.50 with lean ewes in the £45 bracket and plain ewes £35-£40 generally. A lot of Cheviots in the sale today with a top price of £88.50 for some large heavy sorts. £60+ for the decent meated sorts with plain cheviots a good trade in the £40s and £50s for south country bred sheep.

48 Rearing Calves to £475

Skipton market was leading once again for the young calves today which were mainly weeks old rather than months old. An avg of £411 for Blue Bulls with a top price of £450 from JK&PE Hartley. The Blue calf at £450 which was under 4 weeks of age sold to one of the many Calf purchasers that travel from a far every week to purchase quality stock from CCM. Followed by the top price of £450 was another calf from the same vendor at £445. 13 Bull Calves aged 29 days and under sold for £400+. These being mainly Blues and Chars.

Calves above 4 weeks topped at £475 from D Breaks followed by £410 from the same vendor, with both selling to a very active audience for them best sorts with the same purchaser buying both.

Heifers on a roll again. Young calves again in the sale mainly around that £330 mark. More heifers of under 4 weeks and up-to 8 weeks needed on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers’ requirements. Black and white bulls sold to £175 for a 12-week-old calf, down to £82 for a smaller younger sort.
