More lambs about today than we had anticipated, but trade was also better than expectations for all classes. The Smart end were very good to sell, the commercial handy weights receiving strong bidding, meated lightweights best trade for a while, heavy’s 2p-5p better and hill bred lambs 5p up the week with both Mule and Horned Wethers a sharp trade.

At the top end James & Simon Garth from Birk Knott, Keasden had top price per kilo at 258.5p (41kg @ £106) and 255.8p (43kg @ £110) both pens selling to Vivers Scotlamb who secured other pens at 255.8p (43kg @ £110) from Kevin Huck of Bordley and 251.4p (37kg @ £93) from JP&KE Hartley of Bolton Abbey. Heavy lambs were a nice trade, 53kg at £112 from Ken & Hazel Gamble for The Addington Fund, purchased by Keelham Farm Shop, £108 from Kevin Marshall to Swaledale Foods, £104 from Richard & Mark Ireland to Kitson Ltd, and £104 from Tony Kiernan to Kendalls Farmers Butchers.

Handy weights were regularly over 175p with nicer sorts 185p to 195p. Hill Bred Lambs saw best Mules (44kg to 48kg) £25-£28 over the weight, upto £78 from Joe Throup and John Hopkinson. Good Lightweight horned wethers 140p to 150p.

Ewes were a bit better trade, with best Mules in the 70’s and best horned ewes £30’s and £40’s.

Rearing Calves

Dairy av £32.3 Cont av £214.21 Native av £221

A show of calves lacking the quality seen in previous weeks, with a lot of young continentals dampening the averages. Natives saw another nice trade on the Aberdeen Angus Bulls with an average of £248 topping at £350 for a 9 week old bull from Hayton and Stocks.

A plain show of black and whites was clear to see with the average at £32.3. Continentals on offer today were certainly younger than normal, with a lot of straight fortnight old bulls and heifers, selling between £150 and £200 with a handy bull from Throup’s of Skipton topping the bulls at £315 with heifers topping at £310 for a 3 ½ week old heifer from Anthony Bolland the Arches.

NB: Next week is the Craven Dairy Sale with entries closing on Wednesday 12 noon.
