6,105 Prime Sheep

A great show of sheep were presented for sale today and all vendors were well rewarded with an increase in trade prior to the ethnic festival of Eid al-Adha due to take place later this week. There were a lot of heavy lambs in the entry today and the average weight was 43.7kg, with lambs levelling at £70.30 per head.

The Smart goods as usual led the way, and Skipton takes some beating for these with no shortage of Beltex and the smartest continentals making £2plus. David & Iris Boothman of Halton East topped the market at £96 each, whilst Brian Lund of Walshaw topped at 238.9p. Lambs in the 37kg to 42kg bracket were short of requirements and plenty of the first crossed types sold from 165p to 175p in this weight range. Lambs 43kg to 45kg were 155p to 160p and 46kg lambs and above generally around the 150p mark or over for nice Continentals.

The hill bred lambs were very good to sell when compared to last week, with 712 Mule and Masham lambs in the entry averaging £67.77 or 153.7p, a fantastic result given the numbers forward.

A huge show of over 1000 cast ewes all drawn from local farms were a sharp trade and sold in line with recent weeks.

Craven Dairy Auction (44 head)

A definite struggle for the most part but patience paid off with just a little push and shove strong heifers started to sell to a straight price. With an ever darkening cloud looming over the Dairy industry things looked ominous with the shippon full and over flowing, however a murmur of interest prior to the sale evolved into a good, straight trade with cows and heifers taking their time but eventually reaching a good price. Pick of the day was a sweet heifer from Brian Moorhouse which had been calved a fortnight and giving 31kgs, which went on to make £2,200 to Wilmot Blockley. Robin Jennings of South Stainley wasn’t far behind with a heifer from the Roxy family reaching £2100 and heading to the same home.

Certainly a lot more caution ringside with a lot buyers concerned about what the future may hold.
