Prime Sheep

Sheep numbers vastly increased today as we start to see a more seasonal feel to the entry with over 3000 prime and cast sheep penned for the first time this season.  Lambs were reasonably well sold as well on the day, with the mart average of 217p comparing well against the England and Wales average for the day of 205.5p (ref:AHDB) Worth noting that there was a fair cross section of lambs in today, with 1595 Texel crosses averaging 216p, 483 Suffolk and Down cross lambs averaging 204p, and 306 Beltex crosses averaging 251p, a few Mules at 190p and 49 Rouge/Charollais at 214p.
A few lightweight lambs getting forward, those just a touch a short of meat sold around the 190p mark, but better meated types were over 200p. Stephen Pickard had some nice 34kg Texels at 213p, Richard & Mark Ireland sold some 36kg Texels at 226p, and some very smart 37kg Texels at 264p, and their third prize pen of show lambs weighing 38kg sold at 310p, whilst Richard Crabtree sod 38kg Beltex at 292p.
Quite a few commercial Suffolk and Texel Mules weighing 38kg 39kg, either side of 200p, but 40kg to 42kg were mainly selling for topside of 200p. A three quarter bred lambs 38-40kg was generally 210p to 250p, with Beltex crosses in this weight range anywhere from 230p to 270p and the real smart sorts more, 18 pens selling from 270p to 331p and 34 pens from 250p to 269p.
Heavier lambs were easy to place with only 291 lambs scaling 46kg or more, but averaging up at 228p (11p above mart average) which shows the relative demand for these at this time. Joint top price of the day of £139 came for some heavy Texels from Thomas Boothman, but the first at this mark was the champion pen from David & Laura Coar, Darwen, 5 great Texel Beltex crosses weighing 42kg, they sold to the show judge, Tim Hamlet at £139 or 331p/kg for sale in his retail butchers shop in Garstang. Over 20 pens of show lambs forward today and the full results are below.

Craven Dairy Auction (11 head)

Sally Wellock of Oakworth took honours once again at the Craven Dairy sale with a tremendous dairy heifer giving 31kg, which sold for £2100 to the Naylor family of Langbar. “There was very little between the Champion and the Reserve” commented Judge Shaun Sowray, and he wasn’t wrong as Wilson Stewart’s 40kg heifer also rocketed to £2100 selling to the same home with Mr Stewarts other 40kg heifer which was 3rd Prize and sold for £2,000.
