Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

The March Show saw an exceptional entry of high quality cattle which sold to strong lineup of retail customers. Phil Gregory of D&A Gregory &Sons of Bacup was the day’s judge and he selected a very sweet 530kg limousin cross heifer from F&B Smith of Westhouse as his champion which he bought for the days highest price of 269.5p/kg or £1428. The top gross was a heavy heifer at 730kg from BL&R Lund of Walshaw which made £1456 or 199.5p/kg when selling to Kendalls Butchers of Pateley Bridge. 9 customers were ringside for the 26 clean cattle with James Robertshaw the leading buyer with 6 for his Thornton shop followed by Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster with 5 exceptional cattle. D&A Gregory&Sons secured all female rosette winners and an increasing number of 500kg cattle coming forward for sale Charlie Clough of Queensbury added 2 to his account.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cows a sharp trade with the top end of the heavy dairies into £1000 now. Cows with improvement particularly good to sell with the odd animal under 30 months at 161.5p for a lean beef cross and 129.5p for a 27 month old dairy. Heavy dairies 112-117.5p/kg and the steaking cows 100-112p.

3,318 Prime Sheep comprising 2868 Prime Hoggs, 450 Cast Ewes & Rams

A fair trade today for all classes, levelling up at 245p/kg or £110.48 per head. Topping the sale at £150 per head were the champion pen of lambs, 5 homebred Beltex crosses consigned by Henry Atkinson of Kettlesing, weighing 39kg and selling for 384.6p/kg to Vivers Scotlamb, Dornocktown. The same home was also responsible for lambs at £148 £144 and £139, or 379.5p 347.5p 347.4p and 344p and the consignment of 60 Beltex lambs averaging 323p. Michael Hall of Scosthrop made 337p and 325p, whilst Joanne Andrews from Easingwold made £137 and 333.3p/kg. James Towler, Clitheroe was also in the prices at 333.3p with £130 for 39kg. A good run of heavy Texels from H Harvey & Son of Sea Palling in Norfolk sold to £143 for 5 at 59kg, with 11 at 58kg and 20 at 60kg both pens making £140 and the consignment averaging £133.45. EP&JM Hutchinson of Faceby, Middlesborough had their usual consignment of quality continental lambs selling to £142 twice, £140 twice, £139 and £137.50 to average £130.50 for 112 head. Prime and Commercial handyweight lambs continued lines of recent weeks, Texels in 36kg to 45kg weight range averaging 254p, with Beltex in the same range at 303p.  Mule and Masham Lambs were dearer on the week, with Messrs Harvey of Norfolk leading the prices at £118 for a pen of 10, and £117.50 for a pen of 24. Brian Church, Askwith also made £118, with Messrs Pickersgill from Hawksworth at £116 and £113.50, Ellis Bros made £115. Mules averaged £101.34. Horned lambs sold to £106 from J Greenwood, Addingham and £105 from JW Sayer & Son, West End.

Another good trade for cast sheep, exactly 450 Ewes and Rams forward levelling at £101 per head for all breeds (Ewes £99.65, Rams £125.65) Rams sold to £159.50 from Richard Wilson of Beckwithshaw, £153.50 from D Robinson of Queensbury and £149.50 on two occasions from MJ Spensley, Elslack and from RE Stainthorpe of Ripon. Heavy Ewes were a very good trade, Messrs Harvey of Norfolk topped at £149.50 with a Texel x and another pen of 18 made £145.50 form the same home. RE Stainthorpe, Ripon made £144.50 and £142.50, DC Hall Coniston Cold £143.50, JR Crabtree Otley £142.50, JJ Dalby & Sons of Harewood £140.50, and HB Atkinson £140 for a pen of 21 strong Texels. 197 Texel Ewes in the entry averaged £122.45. Mule Ewes sold to £122.50 form MJ Spensley Elslack and £119.50 from EJ Fort of Silsden, £119.50 H Harvey & Son and £118.50 GB Moorhouse. Swaledale Ewes to £79.50 from WR&M Airey & Son of Sutton. Horned Ewes averaged £62.59.

A vastly increased entry this week, and a very similar trade on the week. Outfits with lambs 2/3 weeks old in strong demand, Chris Craven from Kexby leading the way at £265 per outfit for Texel Ewes with Twins. £240 was achieved on 3 other occasions with strong outfits generally £210 plus.

Poor entry but some quality on offer with 2 extra buyers ringside purchasing calves today.

Better trade with the calves today with Black and Whites a flyer with more required in a fortnights time. H&M Dugdale topped the trade Black and white trade today at £108 with an overall breed average of £76. A good show of British Blues today but some size lacked in the majority of the bulls shown.  Averaging £295 Topped at £380 from J&SA Lancaster. Strong Bulls are required next week. Stronger Blue Heifers well sort after with the younger smaller types open to a much smaller range of purchasers. Blue Heifers topped at £300 with an overall average of £242. Top price again from J&SA Lancaster. Moor calves are required on a regular basis!
