Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Hamlets Butchers of Garstang in their search for the best secured the leading gross priced animal at £1473, a 525kg British Blue cross steer consigned by F&B Smith of Westhouse which was also the leading priced animal by weight at 280.5p/kg. Buyer Tim Hamlet then bought the second highest priced beast a heifer at 265.5p/kg or £1460 from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield. A larger show with a few more commercial cattle in the mix which got away well. Leading buyerS were Keelham Farm Shop (Skipton, Thornton) and Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster.

Prime Sheep

Spring Lamb short of numbers and last weeks trade easily upkept, Mark Evans topping the sale at £163 per head and 362p purchased by Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. Robert Towers was next in line at £160 again selling to Countrystyle Meats. John Nutter of Hurst Green sold to 352p purchased by Andrew Atkinson.
Old season lambs were forward in similar numbers and were up 18p/kg on average to level at 257p. Tops of 320.9p/kg for a nice pen of Beltex from R Lennox, Colchester purchased by Keelham Farmshop. The same vendor selling lambs at 314p 308p 306p 300p. William and Mick Oldfield had some Beltex to lead their run at 306p, Stuart Beeforth of Chopgate 305p, Henry Atkinson 300p and 3 pens at 304p. Top price per head was £159 for heavy Suffolks from A Gill & Son of Knaresborough with others at £150. John Nutter of Hurst Green hit £157, Messrs Lennox made £156 £152 £151 of Continental crosses, Raymond and Robert Johnson also made £156 of Texels, whilst George and John Stapleton had pens at £152 and £150.

Cast sheep were a stronger trade on the week with numbers tighter and more are needed for a good line of buyers.

Breeding Sheep

The best trade of the season so far with a full ring of customers and all keen for sheep. Best Texel Shearlings with twins £240 to £270 and good Mule Shearlings with twins £240-£255. A few lots of Mule Hoggs and Singles £160-£170, and older sheep with strong lambs a cracking trade, even broken Mouth twins £180-£200.

Rearing Calves to £455 (31)

Quiet show of calves today but a healthy trade seen right through. Best prices were seen for black and whites calves with 6 different buyers bidding away freely for the goods on offer, best sorts from Wellock’s of Seat House were well fought over with their two straight Holstein Bulls at £180 and £160. A nice show of Aberdeen Angus calves met some fierce bidding with Michael Heron of Leeds and Paul & Janet Bolland of Airton on the receiving end with calves at £305 and £330 respectively.
