Prime Sheep

A great day with 4,197 head of sheep sold and more lambs penned for sale (3762 Head) and the overall selling average just creeping back top side of 170p, a fair achievement given that over 1/3 of the lambs scaled in at 46kg or more, as a result the SQQ average was a whopping 176.1p/kg this week.

The best end topped out at 275p (45kg at £124) for the champion pen in todays Monthly show. Picked out by judge Paul Watson from Hellifield, they headed the prices today when being knocked down to regular retail customers Countrystyle Meats Farmshop and Restaurant of Lancaster. Reserve Champions were Hayley Baines 40kg Beltex crosses selling at 260p or £104 per Head to Vivers Scotlamb of Annan. Other leading prices were Alaistair Jenkinson from Langbar at 256.4p 252.3p 241.5p, Michael Hall of Airton at 254.5p 246.7p, James Garth & Son from Keasen 251.2p 240.5p, Robert Fielden of Todmorden 250.0p 248.6p 245.0p, Hayley Baines 245.5p, Richard Crabtree of Clifton 241.5p and David Boothman of Halton East 241.3p . Outwith the champions, other leading prices saw Michael Hall selling at £112 and £111, with Alaistair Jenkinson also at £111.

Handy weight export lambs 37kg to 41kg were significantly dearer on the week as expected, with a nice skinned Texel Lamb 190p to 210p, and commercial types 175p to 190p. Heavy lambs (47kg +) didn’t take the same lift and prices for these were only very similar on the week. Hill bred lambs again a nice trade, Mule and Horned lambs easily upkeeping last weeks better rates.

Craven Dairy Auction (14 head)

Robin Jennings of South Stainley took top honours today with the Judge Milke Longster picking his heifer as his favourite. The 34 litre Razzle daughter, was calved 18 days and sold for £1950 to Mark Goodall of Tong, with Mr Jennings’ reserve Champion selling to the judge for £1600.

In the cows it was Sally Wellock who saw some fierce bidding with her 2nd Calver giving 35kg selling for £1920 to John Howard of Heslaker, with another cow from Ian Parkinson selling for £1500 to Abbott bros of Dacre.

A trailer full of youngstock again from the Dickinson family of Penistone saw a nice following topping at £800 twice for some healthy bulling heifers.
