Prime Sheep

Another good show of spring lambs with smart sorts in very good demand, up around 240p-250p or more. A nice prime lamb was 205p to 210p whilst a very commercial sort was 190p to 200p. Heavies followed too with a good trade, 190p-205p for straight sorts and 210p plus for smart heavies. Outwith the show Mark Evans made £116 of Suffolk crosses, and John Key made £115 per head of heavy suffolks. Nick Capstick also had £116 for 45kg Texels, Peter Houseman £110 for 53kg Suffolks and Bob Lancaster £109 for 47kg Texels. Richard & Mark Ireland made £107.50 for 38kg Texel Beltex crosses.

There were part lighter weights about in the springers as well, sample prices include John Garnet making £80 for nice 34kg Beltex crosses, John Tennant had £62 for 34kg Mule Wethers, and Ken Throup £68 for 35kg Texel crosses out of Mules.

29 Rearing Calves to £385

B&W av £80.27 Cont av £337.5 Native av £195

A small show with only 29 landing on the dock with arguably the weather and the ensuing Calf Show being the major factors for such a small show. Fred Houseman yet again topped the trade with a highly sought after blue heifer reaching £385. Blue bulls didn’t top so high but averaged a healthy £357.5 however a tremendous Friesian calf from John Wright of Kirk Syke, Airton which sold for £230.

Craven Dairy Auction (6 head)

A lightening trade for the handful in today with a rare second calver from Sally Wellock of Oakworth stealing the show and taking the highest price for almost a year at £2250 for a 2nd calver giving 33kgs. The second prize heifer from DA&SA Fort, Glusburn also met a steamy trade at £1580 with Andrew Jennings’s consignment to £1380. Could of sold 10 times more today but clearly silage time rightly took priority.

Healthy numbers looking like being forward next fortnight with 12 already booked in. Please get them rung in by next Tuesday for catalogue purposes.
