Monthly Show

Leading the way at the August Prime Show was the third prize Limousin cross heifer from Mesrs AA&EE Critchley &Son from Hutton near Preston which weighed 545kg and sold for 281.5p/kg to Hamlets Butchers in Garstang. Mesrs Critchley also produced a 570kg British Blue cross heifer, also the first prize heifer and reserve champion which also crossed the border into Lancashire when joining Countrystyle Butchers of Lancaster for 259.5p/kg or £1479. In a high quality turnout the Champion was a 580kg British Blue cross steer weighing 580kg which sold to the show judge Simon Barker of Stanforths Butchers, Skipton. Despite the strong entry a couple of buyers went away without securing a purchase with all classes very well sold.

3,177 Prime Sheep


Sale rings were busier at Skipton today with larger entries of both cattle and sheep as numbers begin to grow. Today we held our Monthly Prime Sheep Show with judging undertaken by Mr Michael Winchester from Woodhead Brothers Meat Co in Colne. A great show of Continental Lambs dominated the prizes and it was the first prize pen of 5 continentals from Michael Hall of Scosthrop that took the overall Championship, weighing 43kg they sold for £138 each or 320.9p/kg to Countrystyle Meat in Lancaster. Trade was very similar to last week, and vendors were pleased with returns recording an overall average of 198p, Ian Hammond of Glasshouses sold lambs 48kg at £124 also to Countrystyle Meats. Amy Beresford from Halton West had lambs to £113, Simon Bennett of Silsden to £112, Michael Hall a second pen at £111, Michael Hewitt of Giggleswick £110, Tim Robinson from Longridge to £109, Mike Allen of Staithes to £107, Tony Kiernan of Longridge £106 £105.50 £104 and Anthony Hewetson of Bank Newton to £105. Some strong prices per kilo too, outwith the champions Mick Hewitt sold to 261.9p/kg, Ian Hammond to 258.3p, Mike Allen 254.8p, Trevor & Clive Robinson 253.5p, Tony Kiernan 252.4p 251.2p and Michael Hall 252.3p.
Plenty of next grade of smart lambs 220p to 245p, a nice prime lambs 205p to 215p and commercial lowland first cross lambs from 190p to 205p. Mule Wethers trading away to a top of £94 from Messrs Kitching of Threshfield, John Blakey of Greenhow at £89.50, Messrs Booth of Feizor £89 and Ken Dickinson £88 who also had Swaledale Lambs to £80.
Another large show of ewes sold nicely as trade continues to remain strong.

Rearing Calves to £425 X4 (69)

Best calves hard fought over with plain calves and bobby calves cheaper today. Four continental bulls reached the top price from three different vendors, David and Dee Holmes, RL Wright & Son & Johnny and Simon Moon who all saw their calves reach £425. A run of twin bulls however dragged the average back to £346. Black and white bulls saw Anthony Bolland of The Arches with another handy run topping at £95 with Alan Throup of Higher House also on the receiving end of some healthy bidding. Another noted consignment saw Chris Watson of HIR see his young Lim x Flekvieh bulls hit £315 and heifers to £300.

Craven Dairy Auction (23 head)

 David Lawson of Arthington saw his two heifers win the newly calven heifer class this morning with his first prize heifer taking the championship in front of a handy Pedigree 2nd Calver from Wilson Stewart of Carlisle. Both Champion and Reserve found a new home with regular supporter Brian Blezard of Ribchester at £2000 and £1800 respectively.

 

A healthy show of Incalf heifers  were on show today with John Ireland, Thorpe Bassett taking first prize however it was the second prize heifer from Jeff and Judith Throup of Silsden Moor, Incalf to Aberdeen Angus bull duster and due September sold to Roger and Jack Naylor for £1380 with a section average of £1208.
