Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Prime Cattle trade is up again with a small high quality entry of cattle recording a steer average of 258p/kg and heifers 259p/kg more in keeping with Christmas Primestock trading levels. 11 of today’s entry made £1400 or more. Hargreaves Farms of Walton Le Dale turned out the Supreme Champion a 550kg Limousin cross steer which dropped to Mick Etherington of Eldwick for 266.5p/kg (£1466) a price equalled by another Hargreaves steer entry this time weighing 560kg and grossing £1492 when sold to Keelham Farm Shop, Skipton. The Reserve champion was also the first prize heifer a 565kg Limousin cross from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made 266.5p/kg or £1506 when sold to Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster. Meanwhile Mesrs Kitching achieved the top gross price overall in the sale at £1588 for a 605kg Limousin cross steer which also joined Primestock buyer Mick Etherington.

More retail type cattle are required every week.

Cull Cow Prices

Cows a similar trade with all dairies bar one and a shortage of finish in the entry. The few meated dairies were a little easier but comfortably 120p+. Beef cows in demand from feeders and 147.5p/kg and a mature Belted Galloway Bull 114.5p/kg or £1036.

**PRIME SHEEP – PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF TIME**
FROM MONDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER PRIME SHEEP WILL START AT 12.30pm

 

3,879 Prime Sheep comprising 3,221 Prime Lambs & 658 Cast Ewes & Rams

A very sharp trade for all classes today with lambs in high demand for the time of year, and the 3,218 head penned were easily sold, showing a nice rise on the week when levelling at 223.8p/kg or £97.10 per head.
The heavies and smart goods are looking after themselves at the moment, the trade for these very good with 23 pens making £130 or more and 39 pens from £120 to £129.50, on a per kilo basis, 17 pens made from 300p to a top of 348p. The commercial sorts also took a nice turn today with buyers’ keen for well fleshed hill lambs, Continentals from Hill Ewes, and Suffolk Mules.
Top of the shop was taken by George Sunderland of Hebden Bridge with the 1st prize Continental lambs and Overall Champions at the September Primestock Show which were first picked out by show judge Anthony Swales and then purchased by him for his Knavesmire Butchers shop. The pen of 5 weighed 45kg, making £155 per head or 344.4p/kg. Mr Swales also secured a trio of lambs from JS Eddleston of Great Harwood at 346.4p when the 42kg Beltex made £145.50 each.
Tony & Kay Kiernan had a great trailer full of lambs entered today and went home after having achieved the second highest price per head at £146 (44kg at 331.8p) selling to Vivers Scotlamb, who secured other lambs at £143 (332.6p) from T Walmsley, Harrogate, £142.50 (303.2p) from TA Robinson, Longridge, £141.50 (345.1p) RH&MR Ireland, Whalley and £140 (291.7p) from WH Marsden, Leeds.
Others in the 140’s were Kevin Huck, Bordley making £145 (329.5p) and T&C Robinson, Tosside at £143 (340.5p), both pens selling to Hartshead Meats in Mossley.
Top price per kilo belonged to Robert Fielden of Todmorden with a pen of 37kg at 348.6p or £129 per head to Vivers Scotlamb, Mr Fielden make 325p of another pen, George Sunderland a second pen at 315.9p, others with lambs over 300p were Nathan Wade of Bradley, Ellis Bros, S&P Scivin, P Crabtree & Son and RC Crabtree.
Plenty of the better heavy lowland lambs in the £115 to £130 region with the over 52kg averaging £116.42, commercial mediums mainly £98 to £115 and a weight bracket average of £106.17.

Hill bred lambs had Mules averaging bang on 200p, with a range of prices of 189p to 209p and the better end adding up to £90 to £98. Horned lambs and Cheviot lambs making a larger appearance and selling well so long as they well finished with good backs.

 

Ewe trade holding up well this week with an increased entry on the week. 345 White faced ewes sold to a top of £139.50 with the best making £120+ and heavy less well-bred ewes £110+. A lot of medium ewes in today all around the £80-£90 mark with some well-bred ewes £100+ for mediums. Short on the plain ewes of all breeds today. Lean white faced grazing ewes on the £65-£78 mark. Mules sold away well with best £85-£93.50 lighter ewes £75+ Lean mules in the £50-£65 range depending on size. Only 63 swales today and they sold to a top of £61.50 medium well fleshed ewes £50+ with lean in the £30’s and plain sorts carrying a bit of flesh in the £20 region.

29 Rearing Calves to £425

 

Calf trade as expected slightly back on the week with less about trade held up for most goods with black and whites selling very well. Black and White bulls sold from £50-£215. Some cracking British Freison bulls from G Pickersgill & Son selling from £160-£215. Blue heifers selling less on the week with the price for the young rearing calves at 4 weeks being £260-£275 for nearly all goods. Blue Bull trade seemed to hold up better in comparison to the heifers. £445 for the best from DE&MA Booth and another very nice calf from regular vendor JP&KE Hartley reaching £400. Lim Bull from G Pickersgill making £410. Lim Heifers anywhere in the region of £240-£320. Next week we need more Hereford and Natives aswell as the younger and older end of the continentals.
