MARKET REPORT - WEDNESDAY 17TH APRIL

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 752 head of cattle, Comprising: 726 Feeding Cattle (170 Young Bulls, 40 Beef Feeding Cows, 516 Bullocks & Heifers) & 26 Breeding Cattle.

Strong bulls up £20 to £30 per head on the fortnight with a good percentage of 450kg + cattle amongst the spring born entry. Small bulls below 400kg in shorter supply and a good trade with a number of pens of pure bred limousin bulls around 330kg at £870 to £940. Commercial bulls were also an improved trade in line with prime cattle prices.

Todays entry of 40 Beef feeding cows were a very mixed entry but they met with an animated trade as buyers responded to a rising cow trade and relative scarcity of numbers to find all classes selling well to an overall average of £957.56 per head. The better framed cows for short term hard keep were keenly contested making from around £1100 to £1200, with the next grade from £950 to £1100. The leaner types for turning out and grazing were very good to sell with this class up in price by some margin on a few months ago with just one cow in the £600’s and only 8 cows in the 700’s.

Vendors are urged to make use of this form of selling and anyone with cows to sell please contact Jeremy or Ted for more details or to book cows in for sale.

A good trade throughout the store cattle sale today with a larger quantity of yearling bullocks and heifers than we’ve seen all year. A busy ringside meant for some healthy prices with some small grazing bullocks and heifers looking like being the trade of the day. Good yearling bullocks today found a high gear with best types reaching £1050 to £1100, with growthy sorts of bullocks £880 to £1000. Small heifers would find regular homes at £700 - £800 plus as long as it had a touch of shape.

Older cattle still good to sell with a mixed bag of quality on offer today. Strong bullocks peaked with John Rennard of Beamsley at £1270 for Limousin bred from a dairy cow. Good runs of bullocks were a pleasure to sell with some big lots of cattle from D&J Coates, Coniston Cold selling past £1100 regularly with a pen of 3 at £1155. Best heifers made similarly high prices with Alan Knowles of Clitheroe topping with a pen of cracking Limousin heifers at £1185.
