PRIME SHEEP (3,784 Head)

A much increased show of prime sheep consisted of 2,099 Lowland bred hoggs and 1,129 Hill Bred & Horned Hoggs. Quality types a similar trade, Taylor Bros 225p or £85.50, Thwaite Bros 221.4p or £93, Fox Farms 218.8p or £87.50, R Carlisle 217.9p or £85, JS Stephenson 217.9p or £85. Commercial Texel around 38kg to 43kg were a good trade at 180p to 190p, with plainer Continental lambs and Suffolks 175p to 180. Heavy sheep were better to sell, averaging 158p, but the increased proportion of hill hoggs masks the truth that all classes were actually dearer on the week. Mule Hoggs £23 to £26 over the weight, whilst nice horned wethers were £2 to £3 dearer on the week.

A very plain show of ewes were a similar trade on the week, but out of a big show a high proportion were lean Mule or Swale ewes.

CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION (23 head av £2127.39)

A smaller entry than was hoped met a rip roaring trade for the BOCM and Yorkshire Foot Trimmers’ sponsored Show and Sale of Dairy Cattle. The show, kindly judged by Malcolm Abbott of Dacre, produced once again a Pedigree Heifer from Mr Jeremy Taylor of Smallhouse as Champion. The trade set by the first vendor into the ring Mr Richard Walker of East Morton who averaged over £2000 for his 3 entrys. The champion was fourth into the ring, raced to £2400 and was knocked down to a fond supporter of the Smallhouse herd Mr Daniel Reed. From then on trade seemed unstoppable with vendors such as Stephen Coates of Baildon and carried right through to David Lawson of Arthington. The flying trade topped with a Newly Calven 2nd Calver, giving 50 Litres from Robert Swires, Haverah Park which sold to the Kellett Family of Bishop Thornton for £2700.

Next Sale 4th of March.
