PRIME SHEEP

Bank holiday didn’t dampen the entry level today with 3,705 head presented for sale. Trade wasn’t as sharp as last week with fewer buyers operating due to the holiday. Smart lambs generally around £2 per kilo, topping at 267.5p or £107 each for Beltex crosses from DG Boothman, Halton East. Johnny Carr from Askwith was next at 236.4p or £78 for 33kg Beltex.

Messrs Ellis Bros, Addingham Moorside had 2 pens of 39kg Beltex at £87.50 each or 224.4p. The trade for decent Texel Mules 40kg plus was generally £30 over the weight and well fleshed nice 38kg could command the same price but anything short of meat was nearer £25-£27 over the weight.

Still a lot of lambs lacking weight with half the entry scaling 39kg or less. Hill lambs were presented in larger numbers, Mules generally £23-£26 over the weight. The overall selling average for the 3112 lambs was 170.3p/kg or £68.19 each. When doing a quick comparison of the markets on eblex.org this looked a decent result on the day.

Another big show of ewes was made up generally of leaner, fresh spained sorts and also included over 250 horned ewes in the entry of 593 head which pulled the average back. The better end of Mules were towards £70, better horned ewes over £40.

REARING CALVES to £600  average £201.52

The August Calf Show turned into a fantastic day with most classes bursting with entries. The show was kindly judged by Dave Albutt and it wasn’t the easiest of tasks with a handful of calves in the running for the champion rosette, after much deliberation the prize was given to a 40 day old British Blue Bull calf presented by Richard Spence of Sutton and was eventually bought by Mr Mason of Scunthorpe for £410. The trade of the day however came for both JP&KE Hartley, Storiths and Shaun Sowray of Bishop Thornton, each having a British Blue bull calf make £600.

A brilliant day for all who attended with all breeds and classes receiving a good trade.
