PRIME SHEEP (3,658 head)
An increased show of hoggs were cheaper on the week with greater supply countrywide as the harsh winter weather eased and more sheep could find their way out to the marts. Generally all classes would be 5p to 10p cheaper, Commercial Continental export hoggs 150p to 160p, plainer sorts 140p to 150p. The smart end were making 180p to 200p, with not as many pens making over 200p this week. The average was not helped by an increased proportion of light lambs, with 612 hoggs out of the entry scaling 35kg or less. The ewe trade was a copper or two stronger on the week, Heavy Continental ewes £85 to £115, whilst better Mule ewes would be £3 to £5 each dearer on the week.

REARING CALVES to £300 average £147.25
A good entry of calves was met by a mixed trade. Confidence in the continental calves was not as strong as late with a strong bull calf of DL Leeming reaching £300. However with extra buyers present for the black and white calves, trade was buoyant with the average sailing to £113, a 42 day old calf from PA Whittaker reaching £170 and a 3 month old pure Friesian from Graham Hayton reaching £260.
