Beef Shorthorn

The Upsall herd of the Rt Hon Gerald Turton enjoyed one of its most successful days at the 8^th Annual Show and Sale of Pedigree Shorthorn heifers held on behalf of the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society. Upsall’s first success was in the show ring where judge David Dickie of Knockenjig pulled out Victoria X1170 of Upsall as his champion. The Roan April, 2016 daughter of Fortress of Upsall bred from a “Broughton Park Thunder” bred cow scanned incalf to Firefox of Upsall, also winner of the Junior heifer class sold to Leazes Farm, Wolsingham for 5,000gns. Highest price was Clipper X1152 of Upsall another “Fortress” Daughter bred from a “Broughton Park Thunder” cow which scanned to Firefox sold to Slone and Hayton of Barrow for 6500gns.

A pair of eye catching heifers from Upsall was headed by Jilt X1097 of Upsall which combined Dingo breeding with a half sister of Dakota to produce the first prize heifer born in 2015. Sold incalf to “Grenadier”, Jilt also joined Leazes farm for 5,000gns. The 3^rd prize 2015 heifer, “tessa X1106” of Upsall, a roan “Fortress” daughter bred out of the Dingo half sister “tessa x405” sold incalf to “Grenadier” for 6,000gns to Mr P Coates of Armathwaite. Upsall also produced “Non Pareil X1142” a roan heifer out of a “lockawe Lysander” cow by “Glengloy Frigate” which joined W&M Hebron for 3,900gns.

The Podehole herd from Charles and Sally Horrell produced a very good pen of heifers which were un shown. The pick of the pen was “Podehole Phantasy Jessamine” a light roan October 2015 “Podehole Fandango” Red heifer out of the “Trojan of craigeassie” granddaughter “Podehole Phantasy Euphoria” which sold to AC Farms for 4,100gns.

Podehole Gypsy Kiva a February 2016 daughter of “Millerston Fineideal” out of “Podehole Gypsy Diamond “ also joined AC Farms of Oakham for 3,500gns. Messrs Horrell followed this “Podehole Rita jaimee” a red and little white 2015 heifer by “Millerston Fineideal” out of the “Chapelton Clansman” bred Podehole Rita Ginty which once again joined AC Farms for 3,000gns.

The Beautry herd of Rathmell enjoyed one of their most successful days at the fixture producing the overall reserve champion “Beautry Kooky Rose” a light roan 2016 heifer which had previously won the North of England 2016 Calf Championship. By “Beautry Hagrid “ with plenty of growth in the pedigree “Kooky Rose” was scanned incalf to “Pointington Himself” and joined RG Thompson of Whitby for 4,500gns.
