Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A high quality show of clean cattle met a very good trade with a near full complement of buyers. Top call at £1506 was a 585kg Limousin cross heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son of Hutton near Preston which joined Lancashire buyer Hamlets Butchers at Garstang. Martin Brown from Leyburn accounted for 2 leading gross prices with a 535kg Limousin cross heifer from James Drake of Denholme at £1501 or 280.5p/kg which also proved to be the highest price p/kg. His second was a 605kg Limousin cross heifer from Bill Cowperthwaite of Malham Moor which made £1497 or  247.5p/kg.  Countrystyle Bucthers of Lancaster stepped in to buy 2 highlights from the pen supplied by Mesrs AA&E Critchley & Son, both Limousin crosses weighing 515kg and 525kg at 265.5p and 264.5p/kg.

Cull Cow Prices

A good entry of cattle carrying meat and the strong trade for manufacturing meat continues. Top price for a non farm assured Limousin cross was 168.5p and the dairies at the younger end touched 155.5p for Black and White aged 35 months. The lean end of the entry still very good to sell and only a marginal discount for cattle with a non-UK ear tag.

3,648 Prime Sheep comprising 55 Spring Lambs, 3163 Old Season Lambs & 430 Cast Ewes & Rams

An increased show of prime and cast sheep today saw another strong trade all through. The sale started with the Easter Show & Sale of Spring Lambs and judging undertaken professionally by Mr Mick Etherington. The Champion lambs was consigned by JD&V Towers of Farleton weighing 45kg it sold for 355p or £160 to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster. The same vendor- buyer combination  was responsible the reserve champions, a pair of of Beltex Charollais crosses selling for £155. ML Evans from Steeton had first prize Down sired pair and single selling for £157 and £150 respectively. Overall 55 Spring Lambs averaged 305p/kg or £131.44.
Old season lambs were another sharp trade when 3,163 head averaged 242.2p/kg or £105.64 per head. The entry didn’t include as many of the very smart types but those forward again sold to a strong trade. Paul Simpson had a good of Lightweight lambs topping at 338p twice, both pens being 34kg at £115, Andrew Phillips was up at 335p and 332p closely followed by Kevin Marshall at 330p. Messrs Simpson and Phillips both saw their runs average over 300p. Heavy Lambs and smarter end saw Nick Capstick with top price old season lambs at £152 each purchased by Hamlets butchers from Garstang. EP&JM Hutchinson from Faceby had a great run of lambs that topped at £150 £149 £148 twice £146 £144 twice and £142, with their run of 76 lambs averaging £140.63. David Towell sold lambs at £150 and £147 with Ron Wartigg at £147.
Heavy Lambs sold away well all day long with a long list at £135 plus, several runs of fed lambs from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Norfolk and Sussex. One lot of 231 heavy Texel and Suffolk x lambs from Chris Sargent, Sussex averaging 52kg or £130.76, another travelled vendor form Norfolk selling 187 Texel x lambs at 46kg 256p £118.80, Lancashire Vendors were also to the fore with one consignment of 104 Texel x lambs 44kg 260p £115.06, and a fantastic run of 119 Cheviots from one farm av 51.3kg 250.2p/kg £128.35.
Hill lambs were every bit as good to sell as recent weeks, Mules topped at £126 for a pen from Peter Houseman, or 252p/kg from John Nutter of Hurst Green. Swaledale lambs topped at £107 for a pen of 14 weighing 48kg from JP Stirke and to £105 a head for 46kg Dalesbreds from RF Towers & Sons, Wray. Cheviots topped £136 from C Middleton, Mitton.

Cast Ewes again a strong trade and numbers short of recent requirements with additional customers now in regular attendance.

The largest show this season sold away well considering the relative shortage of grass in places compared to other years. Best end £160-190 for singles and £210 - £235 for Twins, medium types £130-140 for Singles £170 - £200 for twins and plainest end eitherside of £100 for singles and £135-£160 for twins

Just 50 calves about today and a healthy trade for the stronger types with Moons of Wigglesworth hitting the top today with a tremendous bull at £455. The Pickersgill brothers from Hawksworth brought a strong packet of Limousin bulls today topping at £420. Black and whites a healthy trade with no real corkers on offer but a healthy average for the types on offer at £60.91.

 

Another run of 8 – 18 day old calves landed today which hampered the averages but received some strong bidding for both Blue Bulls and Heifers topping at £250 and £200 respectively.

Craven Dairy Auction (7 head)

Mark Smith took the top honours in the dairy sale today with a cracking home bred heifer giving 32kg  selling to John Howard of Heslaker Farm, Skipton for £2000. The 2nd prize heifer from the Newbirks herd of David, Claire and Suzy Lawson which was calved 10 days and 31 litres and sold to Ken Throup of Woofa Bank Farm, Silsden Moor for £1950. 

 

Despite being light on numbers a handy contingent of buyers was ringside for the milkers on offer.
