STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 21ST JANUARY 2020

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 862 head of cattle. Comprising: 848 Feeding Cattle (210 Young Bulls, 65 Beef Feeding Cows, 573 Bullocks & Heifers) & 14 Breeding Cattle.

Feeding Bulls – another good show of feeding bulls with the overall average slightly up on the fortnight. Best bulls were a little easier but there was plenty of support for the middle and lower order. Continental bulls averaged £975 up £9 on the fortnight. Under 12 months bulls were £1100 plus at the top end.

Feeding Cows – a very strong trade for feeding cows with average of £832 although lower on the fortnight a reflection of a larger entry of lightweight lean first cross continental cows.

Stores – Generally a very nice trade today, yearling or younger bullocks finding a very strong enquiry, topping at £1050 for 9mo Lims/Charolais from William King, South Kelsey, and the 8-10mo bullocks making mid £800’s to £1000 regular away. Best strong bullocks to £1285 and £1295 from M Ryder & Son, Haverah Park, and the better end from £1100 to over £1200, whilst ome middle of the road continentals looked a very similar trade. Heifers were a great trade all day, under 12mo heifers topped at £1170 from Anthony Rogerson of Chipping, £1070 from T Robinson & Son, Slaidburn and £1040 from Thor Atkinson of Ulverston. The better heifers to feed for retail use in the £900’s and younger end in the 7’s and 8’s. In the over year bracket, K&J Marshall, Skipton topped their great run of Lim and Blue heifers at £1290 and £1240, R&R Holmes from Cross Roads sold to £1270 and M Ryder and Son again in at £1230, but a nice commercial heifer was well sought after today. Native Cattle were in good numbers again today with Dairy Bred Bullocks in strong demand, Black & Whites to £940 and £915, with Montbelliard to £960 and Fleckvieh to £930. Angus bullocks topped £1190 from M Holmes, Burnley and others at £1160 from M Ryder & Son, £1140 from RD Capstick, Clitheroe, Shorthorns to £980 from JA Throup Silsden Moor. Overall there were 161 Native sired cattle in the entry today.
