STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - WEDNESDAY 3RD JANUARY 2018

Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle Forward: 1,021 head of cattle Comprising: 275 Young Feeding Bulls, 16 Beef Feeding Cows, 720 Bullocks & Heifers, & 10 Breeding Cattle. An increased turn out of cattle for the Opening Sale of 2018 at Skipton Mart attracted the usual large contingent of buyers from across the country looking for cattle.

Young Bulls – A very good attendance of returning faces eager to fill pens with the first pick for 2018 of last years spring born bulls, the general run of which was not as strong as previous years. However the numerous regular consignments saw plenty of high quality cattle sell to a section average for 0-12 months of 243 head av £959 all breeds. The short supply of strong cattle 13-17 months of age reflected a strong average of £1099 for 32 head.

Beef Feeding Cows – A very mixed bag, but a sharp trade for anything correct and fit to feed.

Store Cattle – A more mixed show for size and age than sometimes seen at this sale, but none the less a good show. Quality was keenly contested with best sorts of heifers £1250 to £1420 with some finding new homes as breeders. Quite a few people taking notice of the health status of animals, with cattle from BVD accredited herds or tag tested finding a useful premium. Bullocks were good to sell all day with a fair selection of stronger cattle mixed with younger types, including such Annual consignments as Fleets Farms Spring 2017 born Charolais Bullocks and an overall selling average for the 402 steers just topped £1000. Younger yearling heifers and last spring born calves found favour, especially those with that bit more quality.
