Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle. Forward: 692 head of cattle. Comprising: 610 Feeding Cattle (170 Young Bulls, 73 Beef Feeding Cows & Stock Bulls, 367 Bullocks & Heifers) & 82 Beef Breeding & Pedigree Cattle.

A good show of strong spring born bulls with plenty of customers looking for the strong end. £1100 certainly the ceiling for most of the top end, a reflection of the reducing deadweight price.

Beef Bred Feeding Cows saw seasonal numbers still at a high point with 73 head forward for sale. Only a couple of pure bred cows about, but these and the best ¾ bred cows from £1000 to a top of £1190 from HF Stubbs Rathmell. Again the genuine cows for turning out and grazing were strongly sought after with a packed ringside of customers competing hard to secure cattle whilst they are available. Keep the numbers coming whilst trade is there, an overall average of £874 per head makes them look nicely sold. Contact Ted or Jeremy for more details on trade or to discuss sales.

A decent number of store cattle on the book again this week with a spread range in prices. Strong short keep cattle would be slightly dearer on the fortnight due to an overall better quality show throughout. An example of this would be a run of belting heifers from Andrew Rigby of Slaidburn who saw his 14 heifers av £1197, peaking at £1300 and heading home with Mellin and Cropper of Long Preston.

The more commercial end of the strong cattle were certainly harder to place today as a result of the falling deadweight price however the best strong Beef X Dairy cattle from the likes of Naylors of Ilkley could still command £1100+. Younger cattle found a much more selective audience today with arguably the poorer end of the small cattle the best to sell with plenty of bidders in the £600 - £700 bracket, however the smarter retail potential yearling cattle weren’t quite as potent as previous weeks as a result of the downward pressures on the end product price. The best of the yearlings would come from the Lodge family of Malham who peaked the section £1100.

Another strong entry of native sired cattle with 92 Sire Identified cattle entered for sale with the stand out price coming from Messrs Ewin- Newhouse with a big Hereford bullock at £1070.

82 Breeding Cattle inc 14 Pedigree Bulls

The Championship at the Lingfields Beef Cattle fair was awarded to SD Gill of Dacre with his 22 month old British Blue bull Hallfield Malc, Sired by Trencrom KA Ching bred out of the Dafydd D’ochain daughter Hallfield Easy. Bred from Easy Calving lines, the natural born bull went on to sell for 2600gns to Trevor & Joe Stoney of Pateley Bridge. Reserve Champion was CD Timms from Appleton Roebuck with Charollais bull, Wensleydale Orlando which at just 14 months and with an EBV in the top 10% for calving sold to GR&J Batty of Tatham for 2400gns.

The pedigree females saw a top of 1300gns K Sunderland of Rossendale with Ploverheights Omega a 12 mth old maiden heifer bred by the Wilodge Cerberus son Cornfield Jack selling to M&S Shaw of Shelley.

In the pure bred bulls Simon Bennett of Silsden sold a Gunnerfleet Limmy Son a 2011 born bull ready for work to Stuart Barrett of Summerbridge for 2000gns

A good entry of commercial beef breeding cattle today as numbers grow for the late spring/early summer sales and this will continue for the next few sales with some good cattle on offer. Keep an eye on the catalogues.
