MULTI BREED PEDIGREE CATTLE PRESS - WEDNESDAY 29TH MAY 2019

Show principals claim leading prices at CCM Skipton beef cattle highlight British Blue and Charolais bulls bagged principal show and leading price honours at Skipton Auction Mart’s Lingfields Beef Cattle Fair, the multi-breeds finale of the venue’s 2019 pedigree beef season. (Wed, May 29) Claiming both the championship and top price of 2,600gns was a 22-month-old Blue bull from Stewart Gill’s Hallfield pedigree herd in Dacre, Harrogate, who was showing for the first time at the annual highlight.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 27TH MAY 2019

407 Breeding Sheep A lovely late season show for the Bank Holiday singles show experienced a nice trade, best of the day was £310 for the 1st Prize Lowland Ewe with a single lamb at foot. Presented by John & Janet Wilson, Settle, this Beltex cross Rouge Shlg with a Beltex Lamb sold to C Dabill, Yeadon. The same vendors had others at £240, £220 twice, and £200 twice. Hywell Williams Llangadog brought his second spring consignment north to Skipton and topped at £240 for a pair of Texel Hoggs with Singles. Other better end of Ewes with twins £180 to £200. Robert Johnson made £200 of Texel Hoggs with singles, JW Stockdale £190 of Texels with Twins, whilst best Mules with singles in the £180’s (£188 and £185 RG Johnson) and other good outfits in the £170’s, with Mule hoggs av £171 per outfit and Texles £174. Several batches of geld Gimmer hoggs had Texels at £150 MG Benson, £140 and £130 H Metcalfe, and Mules to £110 H Williams and £105 M Burton.

Craven Dairy Auction (10 head) A good trade in the dairy ring this morning with Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton claiming the championship with his Armitage Pesky daughter, which giving 30kg at just 11 days calved went on to sell for £1900 to JP&KE Hartley of Beamsley. A couple of 3rd calvers from Ian Parkinson of Barden sold away nicely to a high of £1500 to Roger and Sam Naylor of Middleton, Ilkley.

Peter Baul brace champion and reserve at Craven Dairy Auction A brace of newly calven heifers from Peter Baul’s Ravensgate pedigree herd in Bishop Thornton stood champion and reserve at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest Craven Dairy Auction show and sale. (Mon, May 27) Mr Baul, who trades as M Baul & Partners, picked up his second title win of the year with his 11 days-calved, 30-litre and rising heifer, Ravensgate Pesky Heather 377, by the well regarded Genus sire, Welcome Armitage Pesky. She sold locally for £1,900 top call to the Hartley family in Beamsley.

CALF SHOW PRESS - MONDAY 20TH MAY 2019

Longster bull calf claims champion and top price honours at Skipton North Yorkshire dairy farmer Mike Longster won his first-ever rearing calf championship at Skipton Auction Mart’s Spring show and sale. (Mon, May 20) Mr Longster, who runs a 225-strong Holstein Friesian dairy herd at New Causeway Farm, Fellbeck, Harrogate, with his father, Fred – Mike’s wife, Caroline, is calf feeder-in-chief – clinched the title with his first prize British Blue-cross bull calf, a home-bred by the Genus sire, Glacier.

CALVES - MONDAY 20TH MAY 2019

Rearing Calves to £460 (123) B&W av £58.54 Cont av £329 Native av £178.89 A tremendous show of calves for this morning’s spring show and sale of calves with Robert Foster of Tadcaster taking charge with the judging. The judge stood by his decision and bought the champion, a tremendous British Blue bull presented by Mike Longster of Fellbeck with the hammer falling at £460. The Reserve Champion from Sowray Bros of Bishop Thornton again sold to the judge for £440 this time for cracking 7 week old Genus Jack son. A superb run of calves were on show today especially in the British Blue bulls with 14 calves over £400 with a Simmental Bull also up at £440.

BREEDING SHEEP - MONDAY 20TH MAY 2019

470 Breeding Sheep Another good show of nearly 200 outfits late in the season and a sharp selling trade. Best Hoggs and singles up to £195 and best of the rest £175, others in the £160’s, better continental ewes with twins to £232 from Rosie Dunn, and the same vendor having the top price singles at £195 per outfit. **NEXT WEEK** BANK HOLIDAY SHOW & SALE – Special prizes for Single Sheep with lambs, and special Annual Consignments of Swaledale sheep with Lambs form John Bland Crowden and Roy Nelson Bordley. Dewi Jenkins’ Rose blooms to claim 8,500gns top price at CCM Skipton Spring sheep dog sale Welsh handler, Ceredigion’s Dewi Jenkins, who is currently producing some of the most sought-after and best-sold working sheep dogs in Britain, was again top dog on price at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest Spring sale. (Friday, May 17) Mr Jenkins, also a well-known trialist who farms Welsh Mountain ewes and Welsh Black cattle at Tynygraig Farm, Tal-y-bont, Aberystwyth, claimed his highest-ever price at Skipton of 8,500gns (£8,925) with his 13-month-old red and white bitch, Graylees Rose.

CCM LOOKS FORWARD TO NSA NORTH SHEEP 2019

CCM Skipton looks forward to NSA North Sheep 2019 As one of the mainline sponsors, Craven Cattle Marts in Skipton will have a high profile presence on its indoor show stand at NSA North Sheep 2019. Fittingly for such an event, live sheep will again be available for viewing – a Swaledale ewe with North of England Mule lambs at foot, along with a Continental hogg with Beltex lambs. There will be the usual warm welcome to all at the CCM stand, which will feature photographic displays and offer light refreshments.

CRAVEN LIMOUSIN DAY - WEDNESDAY 15TH MAY 2019

A breed record of 10,000gns was established for the Limousin breed at the Craven Cattle Marts Ltd Craven Limousin Day. ‘Oddacres Oswald’ was presented by John & Claire Mason of Embsay at 12months of age being fully French bred by Linzo out of the cow Idee, having previously been placed 2nd in the NE Limousin Breeders Club herd competition in 2018. Oswald is a bull with extreme muscle and after standing 3rd in the Junior Bull class in the morning class, he went on to sell to Richard Sandham on behalf of Bradford Waste Traders.
