PRIME SHEEP (4,216 Head)

The overall average was slightly down today for an entry of 3,823 lambs and 393 ewes.

Another good crowd of buyers bid strongly for quality lambs at the right weights.

37kg to 42kg first cross Continental lambs well fleshed were all 160p to 175p/kg, with the smart sorts finding a particularly nice trade. 34 pens sold for over 200p and another 33 pens sold at 180p to 200p. The top end prices were all headed by Martin & Val Brown who sold a pen of 7 Beltex cross weighing 41kg at £95 (top price per head) 10 Beltex cross weighing 32kg at £80 each (250p/kg) and 2 Beltex crosses at 35kg at £88 each or 251.4p/kg (Top price per kilo).

Heavy lambs were a bit cheaper on the week as were the Hill bred lambs. Mule lambs generally £16 to £18 over the weight. The overall average of 156.44p/kg was achieved with 2,774 Suffolk & Continental lambs and 1,049 Mule, Swaledale and other Hill bred lambs in the entry.

For vendors information, any prospective vendors who use to web to make informed choices of where to sell prime lambs by comparing auction websites on Monday evenings and reading what some say have been their averages achieved in the morning may also find it useful to look at the industry website www.eblex.org.uk/markets

This information is the actual quantity of numbers sold and actual average prices achieved, just follow the links to “auction mart reports” and then “individual auction markets”. It is interesting sometimes to compare what the competition report on their website and then actually what has happened.
