2,580 Prime & Cast Sheep

Given the atrocious weather this last few days it was amazing to see such a good of sheep turn out for sale, and vendors who braved the conditions were rewarded with a sharper trade on the week, the overall average standing at 196.25p (the SQQ weight range – up to 45kg – averaged 198.7p/kg). The smarter lambs on the day sold really well, with Ian & Mary Lancaster of Pendleton near Clitheroe leading the way at 270.0p or 40kg at £108 each. They also sold further pens at £115, £109 and £102. And it was generally Lancashire vendors that were to the fore with Duncan Cowking of Slaidburn selling Beltex crosses at 269.2p, William Oldfield of Newsholme 268.9p, Robert fielden of Todmorden at 267.1p and John Eddleston of Great Harwood at 265.8p. Ellis Bros led the way for Yorkshire at 264.7p. whilst John Mellin of Hellifield topped the sale with Texels at £118 each. The Beltex sale average was 231.p/kg.

Heavy lambs sold to an increased trade this week, the 46kg to 52kg weight bracket averaging £91.99 each and the over 52kg bracket standing at £94.94 each.

Export lambs were generally around £2 kilo or just over, the 36kg to 45kg bracket averaging 201.49p/kg, and this category saw numbers way short of buyers requirements.

Hill lambs saw farm assured Mule wethers quite nice to sell, top priced Mules at 200p.

Cast sheep were a more varied selection, but trade was very much along similar lines to previous weeks.

Craven Dairy Auction (16 head)

A small show of dairy cows today, which was probably best for the trade that was at hand, however it was not quite as dire as expected with some good heifer moving quite freely throughout the sale most of all the Champion heifer from Robert Crisp at Calton which trundled its way to a straight price of £1980 for a commercial heifer giving 6 ½ Gallon.

Other cattle got away slowly with Peter Baul the best of the rest with his second prize pedigree heifer reaching £1840 with a good portion of the rest from £1350 to £1700. Enough bidders to sneak an average trade with all things considered.
