2,276 Prime Sheep

The prime sheep was buoyant today. A large show of NS lambs attracted the full company of retail and wholesale butchers together with some of the major processors who are also in the market now for new season lambs. Trade was nice, with the few best pens topping £3/kilo from 3 different vendors, those being Michael Hall from Scosthrop, Tim Robinson from Longridge and topping at 323p was Richard Lea from Wortley. The SQQ (32kg-45kg) for todays sale was 256.4p/kg whilst the overall average for every new season lamb in the market was 254.9p. Both averages comparing well on a local and national basis.
The Old season lambs were plentiful in number and were dearer on the week. Some excellent runs of fed hogs, some coming from as far away as Buckinghamshire today together with the regular local consignors who enjoyed a good late season trade. Fleshed exports weights, farm assured and well presented sheep were from 215p to 230p, up to 236.3p for Continentals from TH Heslop & Sons of Spofforth. The better heavies were from 200p to 215p up to 225p for 48kg from Tim Robinson of Longridge. Mature hoggs were down in price a touch today, and anything lacking flesh is now discounted heavily.
A big show of Ewes was forward for sale today, and these were harder to cash than recent weeks.

Breeding Sheep (577)

A big show of Breeding Sheep attracted another large company of buyers. The quality on show was not just as good as last week, but trade for Hoggs with lambs was cheaper on the week with £180 to £200 the mark for the better outfits and £170 to £175 for more commercial types. Young Ewes with nice lambs however were a fast trade with customers again keen for nice young outfits to put into flocks. The older of sheep with nice lambs sold away well, with feeder/finishers who have grass in abundance in good form for the right goods.
