Cull Cow Prices

A shortage of cattle carrying finish, as dairy cattle are inevitably moved on. Cattle remain good to sell with the young lean end supported by feeders and the shortage of finish keeping the top end a respectable if marginally less trade.

3,923 Prime Sheep

Lambs forward in larger numbers today and trade slipped on the week as a response to larger supply of lamb everywhere. Best lambs topped at 222.5p (40kg @ £89) from James Garth of Keasden. Handy weighted lambs were best to sell with nice 38kg to 42kg nearer 160p generally. Around 150p though was the mark for a commercial lamb, with heavy commercial lambs 140p to 155p, although a smarter skinned sort could make more with Alan Harker selling 48kg up to £86.

A big show of cast sheep were a straight trade with fleshed but lean ewes in strongest demand.

A handy show of 65 calves met the unrelenting trade with some small calves making some serious prices. Black and Whites were a pleasure to sell with no less than 8 different purchasers battling it out for the goods. Topping with a cracking Friesian calf was Michael Heron of Bramhope which hit £270, with a lot of good Holstein calves above £150 with just a few planer sorts pulling the average down to £125.97.

In the continentals heifers were the choice of the day with Blue Heifers averaging £441.43 with a noticeable attendance of Suckler Cow purchaser nudging the trade to a strong average.

Aberdeen Angus bulls had a flyer averaging £323.33 and topping at £375 with heifers averaging £227 but with a lesser show compared.

Calf ages today averaged 33 days of age for Black and Whites and British Blues averaged 39 days.
