5,805 Prime Sheep

This was the third week in a row with over 5,000 sheep penned for the weekly prime and cast sheep market and the fourth week in a row that trade remained above 150p market average. The best end were above £2 per kilo as usual, and a nice ¾ Texel or Beltex was around 180p. Export and handy weights easily upkept last weeks rates, whilst Mules got stronger as the sale progressed mainly around £18 over for Medium weights, and £15 - £17 over for handy weights.

Cast sheep were forward in the largest number seen this season and decent ewes were good to sell, whilst lean ewes are attracting feeding customers to the ringside.

Rearing Calves to £440 (85)

B&W av £96.68 Cont av £362.33 Native av £320

Another handy show of calves today with 85 on offer with a large proportion of Black and Whites up for grabs, 47 in fact. A mixed bag of black and whites today with young calves making strong prices, and fleshy calves heading nicely towards £100 on onwards with an overall average of £96.68 topping at £180 for a fantastic bull from Whitakers of Bolton Abbey.

Continentals were also good to sell with heifers looking as strong as bulls on today’s price. A blue heifer from Richard Sutcliffe topped proceedings at £400 with Richard also taking joint top in the Bulls at £440 with James Gooch keeping him company. David Hall of Conistone Cold would have a very nice trade with his four to five week old blue heifers averaging around £360.

It hasn’t been mentioned for a few weeks but black and white calves averaged 36 days of age and Native and Continental Calves averaged 43 days of age for today’s sale.
