MONDAYS MARKET REPORT - Forward: 50 Prime cattle comprising 21 Clean Cattle (under 30 mos), 2 Clean Cattle (over 30 mos) & 27 Cast Cattle 1,742 Prime Sheep comprising 1315 Spring Lambs, 77 Prime Hoggs inc 23 Mature, 350 Cast Ewes & Rams 37 Rearing Calves



 

Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

 

Ellisons Butchers of Cullingworth were back at the ringside securing the top gross prices in both sections supplied by Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield whose top priced British Blue cross steer weighed 585kg and made £1407 (240.5p/kg) followed up by a 560kg Limousin cross heifer at £1392 or 248.5p/kg. The highest price per kg price was 257.5p/kg paid by George Cropper of Sandersons Butchers of Baxenden for a 530kg Limousin cross heifer which made 257.5p/kg or £1365 when bought from Mesrs RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton.

Once again cattle were spread evenly around the ring with Keelham Farm Shop purchasing 4 for their Skipton store, and honours even amongst the other retail shops of Robertshaws Farm Shop, Thornton, Countrystyle Meats, Lancaster and Paul Ellison, Cullingworth.

A few heavy commercial cattle in todays entry most making towards 220p/kg liveweight, helped by another wholesale order at the ring side.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cows a very firm trade and once again a good show of meat and weight. Big dairies are plus or minus 130p top was 136.5p and £1173 as a top gross and once again a heavy first cross British blue at £1120 or 145.5p/kg. Dairy breeds with improvement are a very good trade particularly if below 36 months with nearly all going to feed at the moment.

A smaller show of lambs this week with some vendors cautious following the lower prices seen late last week. The tighter supply had the desired effect with our sale average levelling at 220p across the board for 1315 head sold, being 5p to 10p above expectations.
As ever smart lambs found a very keen enquiry at Skipton and this week top spot belonged to S&NV Jowett of Queensbury selling at 300p/kg to Knavesmire Butchers of York who secured lambs at 285p from T&C Robinson of Tosside. Robertshaws Farmshop of Thornton, Bradford were buying a god run of lambs today including a pen at 279p from TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends.
Per head prices saw some excellent results, tops of £134 from TR Thwaite & Son of Horton in Craven, £130 from TH Mellin of Black Lane Ends and £130 from DG&M Scott of Sawley. All three pens sold to Brayton Farmshop.

 

Ewe trade very similar on the week. Some best ewes a small step behind last week but lean meat looking dearer with plain. Herdwicks topped at £60.50 from I Woodward Duffield. Cheviots £63.50 for some light weight ewes from the same vendor. Zwarbtles to £115 S Spensley. 84 swales sold to an average of £48.69 topped at £68.50. 100 Mules sold to £81.50. The show of mule ewes today would be a plainer sort on the whole to them seen in past weeks.  108 Texels sold to an average of £83.34 and to a top of £131.50 D&L Coar. Heavy continentals very similar on the week a touch less with some but lean meat could be up £6-£8 for the continentals.

Rearing Calves to £470 (37)

Buyers from far and wide came to purchase Skipton’s quality once again. The sale today consisted of mainly 4-6 week old calves with prices paid for young calves looking extremely favorable. Trade was electric from start to finish with all buyers ringside showing much more confidence is in the beef trade at present.

Blue Bulls topped at £450 twice with an overall average of £392. Blues Bulls regular away in the £410-£450. Sim Bulls topped at £470 with a breed average of £457. Black and Whites calves sold to £220 with an average of £136. Blue Heifers topped at £410 with an average of £358. All Blue Heifers sold in excess of £330. Limi Heifers an astonishing trade.
