A good day to sell lean and plain cows with strong demand for manufacturing meat and the average on paper unable to convey the strength of trade just as good with a lot of steaking type cows well into the 120ps and the odd heavy dairy 130p and the average on paper reflects the percentage of plain cattle.

2,704 Prime Sheep

As expected, the levels of trade seen last week could not be maintained, or sustained by the industry for that matter, and so there was a revaluation. Although it may look a fair fall of 39p, down to 241p, in real terms for the time of year we should bear in mind that it is still a very strong trade compared to previous years, and back to where we were just 2 weeks ago. So smart lambs were £3 or just over, good fed hoggs could still command a fair premium above mart average by making 260p-280p, but those lacking flesh are avoided by processing customers and so selling to store buyers and going for a months feed. Best Hill Hoggs few and far between, more around the 220p mark this week.
