Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

James Robertshaw was in strong form securing supplies of high quality beef for his own premises Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton and for Keelham Farm Shop in Skipton. His own purchases included the leading gross price a 585kg Limousin cross heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton for £1407 or 240.5p/kg. The top price by weight was 244.5p/kg or £1406 paid by Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton for a 575kg Limousin cross heifer presented by CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield. James Robertshaw was the days leading buyer with 7 to his own name 4 for Keelham in Skipton representing a busy weekend and forward planning to ensure supplies for the next few weeks.

4,600 Prime Sheep comprising 4184 Prime Hoggs, 379 Cast Ewes & Rams & 37 Goats

The busiest day of the season so far with 4184 lambs and 416 Ewes, Rams and Goats penned for sale.
Lambs were a simply lovely trade, and there is never a need to fix the figures here, the AHDB website verifies that the Skipton market average today was 268p for everything sold, although I’m told others from earlier in the day feel the need to mis-quote results on their website.
No need to go into much detail, the results speak for themselves with an overall average per head of £120.33 per head , comprising 3051 Lowland bred lambs and 1133 Hill bred lambs. Top price per head of £167.50 was achieved by J Baines, Gisburn for Texel cross, JJ&D Cowking, Slaidburn made £158, and R France & Son, Scholes made £157 followed by JE Burrow at £156. EP&JM Hutchinson topped their run at £155 with 121 head averaging £143.55. Per kilo Henry Atkinson had some lovely Beltex crosses top at 389p (38kg £148), others at 371p and Jeff Burrows to 370p. In todays sale 286 Beltex crosses av £128.25 or 324p/kg, 2638 Texel crosses av £122.73 or 271p. Hill bred lambs sold exceptionally well, Steve Dorey sold 47kg Mashams at £128 or 272p and 44kg Mules at £118.50 or 269.3p 264,8p twice and 263.6p. Mules were to £132 from J Baines and GW Houseman. Phillips Stirke from Easingwold sold 3 pens of Mules at 46kg £121 twice and £120.50, and 2 pens of Dalesbred 45kg to £118.50 and £118. SBF sold to £120 form AR&CA Parkinson and 268.4p and 267.9p from J&E Slater. Cheviots sold to £140.50 and 276p from Colin Middleton, Clitheroe.

Cast Sheep followed on from the lamb trade, 4 pens of lowland ewes at £200 plus , the remainder of strong Down and Continental Ewes £160 to £195, to average £149 against an overall ewe average for 356 head of £134.70. Mules topped £177.50 from SR Dorey, Newark others at £159.50 from James & Matt Reeday, Hetton, and £159.50 from Richard & Lizzie Spencer of Rotherham. Horned ewes topped at £109.50 from Beeston Hall.
23 Rams topped £184.50 for Texel from RE Metcalfe & Son, Linton, and £184.50 from J Cheetham Pateley Bridge. Hill Rams saw Lonks to £141.50 form Beeston Hall Farm and Swales to £134.50 from WR&M Airey Sutton in Craven. Rams averaged £122. A run of 37 goats in todays sale topped £91.50.

Rearing Calves to £405 (129)

The calf show today was very kindly judged by Mr Tom Heseltine who cast his expert eye over the calves on show, a Blue Bull from Mr Middleton of JP & KE Hartley was awarded Champion calf followed by Mr Shaun Sowray of A Sowray & Sons receiving reserve Champion for his Blue Heifer.

129 Calves in the sale today with a small number forward for show. The sale consisted of large runs of moderate farming calves with the very best Blues carrying age short of requirements. The sale had 15 active buyers ringside with many looking to buy them in bulk as ewes and lambs have now left the sheds. 37 Blue Heifers sold to a top £340 from A Sowray followed by £280 from Mr Longster. Many heifers could be bought around that £240-£280. Blue Bulls topped the auction once again topping at £405 from JP & KE Hartley following closely behind at £400 from Mr Longster once again. The best Blue Bulls would be bought £330-£405 with Mediums £260+ with just a touch smaller all around the same money with only a couple just under the £200 mark. 14 Angus Bulls came to an overall sale average of £182 and topped at £285. Black and White calves topped at £118 from Mr Fort of Silsden and same to an overall breed average of £62. 4 Holstein Friesian calves sold over £100.
