Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Prime cattle trade is indicative of a very strong retail demand, steers averaged 253p/kg and heifers 234p/kg with 2 B&Ws in the average. Eat out to Help out has certainly lifted the catering trade and steak is high up the list when it comes to top sales when eating out. Starting with the retailers it was James Robertshaw buying for Keelham Farm Shop , Skipton who was amongst the handier weights with the highest priced p/kg offering a 550kg British blue cross heifer from RT&J Critchley & Sons of Hutton which made 263.5p/kg or £1449. Top steer was a 560kg Limousin cross from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made 261.5p/kg or £1464 when sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop of Thornton. At the slightly heavier end of the market of 600kg and the leading gross prices was Primestock buyer Mick Etherington with two heifers from the pen of CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield both Limousin, 600 and 610kg which made £1551 (258.5p/kg) and £1546 (253.5p/kg). Keelham Farm Shop accounted for the top gross steer a 585kg Limousin cross from E&M Townley&Sons of Clapham which made £1506 or 257.5p/kg.

4,004 Prime Sheep comprising 3,519 Spring Lambs, 485 Cast Ewes, Rams, Hoggs & Goats

A much larger show of 4,004 sheep penned for sale this week with the 3519 head of lambs selling to a total clearance and sale average of 210.4p/kg or £88.70 per head. Trade was a two tier affair, with smart sorts together with medium and heavy types receiving a good following all sale long, 46kg and over were short of requirements, whilst 43kg to 45kg weights also sold well all day. A handier weighted lamb though, especially 37kg to 40kg if just a commercial sort was harder work on the week. Hill bred lambs with plenty of weight on board were like their lowland counterparts receiving premium prices above the 38kg to 41kg weights. The day can be easily summed up by the weight grades with 439 lambs scaling 46kg to 52kg levelling at 217.2p or £103 per head, against 2,984 in the 36kg to 45kg bracket at 209.5p or £87. Although these prices are down on the week by some margin, it’s worth noting that the averages are still 24p/kg in front of those seen this week last year.

At the top end of the sale, 6 pens made in the £130s, with a top of £139 or 308p/kg paid to JC Marshall, Dacre for Beltex crosses purchased by Brayton Farmshop, Selby. RJ&LM Wilkinson from Cowling made £138 and J Wood, Trawden £136. Again both lots going to Brayton Farmshop.
J Brigg from Allerton, Bradford was up to £136 when selling Continentals to Joe Bosworth, and N Boynton from Ripon made £133 to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thronton, and then £132 to Keelham Farmshop in Skipton. Robertshaws also purchased lambs at £127 from JC Marshall who also sold lambs at £124 to Swaledale Foods in Skipton.
2 pens over 300p today, and a further 51 pens at 250p plus.

Hill Bred lambs topped at £100 for a pen of Mule Wethers from KA&HL Fawcett & Son, Barden selling to Swaledale Foods in Skipton, closely followed at £96 for Mule Wethers from KM&L Throup, Silsden Moor. JC&N Throup, Draughton made £92.50, JR Taylor & Son Winterburn £91 and JJ Beckwith & Sons, Gargrave £90. Mashams sold to £91 from A&SL Throup & Son, Silsden, and Cheviots to £91 from Grain Farm Ltd Hebden Bridge.

485 Cull Ewes in total today. 166 Mules selling to a much faster trade on all types. Heavy Meated Mules £80+ with big framed Mule ewes selling to highs of £96.50. 123 White Faced Ewes sold today with heavy and best bred ewes again well sort for with plenty of purchasers for the class of ewes ringside. Top Price of £136.50 from G Sunderland for some heavy well bred ewes. Best bred medium weight ewes well away swelling £100+ with the heavier best bred sheep £120+. Beltex ewes topped the trade today at £152.50 from JC Marshall and an overall breed average of £108.30. All plain/ lean Lowland grazing ewes sold tremendous with buyers ringside looking to fulfil feeding orders yet again. Grazing Mules £55-£65, Lean White Faced Ewes £70-£85 with plain ewes not far behind if fit to graze. The very plain ewes with age not on their side proved harder to cash.

86 Swales, best meat ewes £50+ upto £56.50 Lean meat £35-£45, Plain swales harder to cash. Cheviot ewes sold to £106.50 from Fleets Farms followed closely behind by LJ Penter at £99.50.. More Ewes required weekly.
