1,340 Prime Sheep (comprising 1071 Spring Lamb, & 269 Hoggs, Cast Ewes & Rams)

A few more lambs about and they met with a far firmer trade across the board with two buyers making their seasonal return helping to set up a strong line up of buyers. It was the heavier lambs that were best to sell, the 46kg to 52kg weight range levelled out averaging a healthy 229p/kg or £110 per head. John Turner, Draughton had 52kg at £121 purchased by Countrystyle Meats Farm Shop and Restaurant in Lancaster, whilst TH Mellin Black Lane Ends also had 52kg at £121 purchased by Swaledale Foods Ltd. The same combination of vendors both sold 50kg lambs at £120, again both pens purchased by Swaledale Foods Ltd. Mr Turner also had a pen of 12 Texels at 48kg making £120 to Keelham Farm Shop in Skipton, whilst George Emmott Steeton topped his run at £118 for 49kg selling to L Wood & Son, Scammonden and Luke Mellin Gisburn made £119 of 52kg selling to Countrystyle Meats.
The Overweight Lambs (over 52kg) saw some cracking prices too, JA&JM Wade & Son Cononley made £129 per head of 57kg Rouge crosses again purchased by Countrystyle Meats Lancaster, TH Mellin made £123 of 54kg Suffolks and John Turner made £122 of 57kg Texels. Mr Turner made £119 on two further occasions, both pens being 53kg Texels, whilst EP&JM Hutchinson from Faceby, Middlesborough also made £119 for £55 Suffolks. It was Messrs Hutchinson who achieved both top price per head and top price per kilo in the medium weight bracket with a Beltex cross weighing 44kg making £139 or 315.9p/kg purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, Mossley. Rob Marshall Dacre had lambs in the medium weight bracket when his 44kg Texels sold at £121 (275p) to Vivers Scotlamb, and David & Laura Coar Darwen made £114.50 of 44kg Beltex (260p) again to Vivers Scotlamb. Bob Lancaster West Marton had a good run of lambs the best of which were £112.50 for 45kg Beltex (250p) purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Per kilo prices saw Tony Kiernan, Preston up at 272.5p (40kg £109) to Vivers Scotlamb, JR Hemmingway Ripon 265p (40kg £106), Tim Robinson Longridge 257p (42kg £108) and JC Marshall Dacre 257p (43kg £110.50). Overall Average stands at 225.3p/kg or £96.89.
A good trade for cast sheep, heavy Ewes selling to £129.50 from EP&JM Hutchinson, Faceby, other nice selling Lowland ewes £95 to £110. Like last week though, it was the leaner fleshed sorts that were best to sell with over fat ewes not the best of sellers at the moment. Not many Mules about, but mid 70’s top end for a mixed selection, whilst hill ewes finding a strong following probably due to being a touch leaner. Nice Horned Ewes late 50’s to early 60’s, hill ewes into the 70’s. Overall average £68.
