Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

Top price was a Limousin cross heifer from Malcolm Metcalfe of Baldersby weighing 415kg and making 258.5p/kg when sold to Charlie Clough of Queensbury.

Cast cattle a firmer trade. Dairies carrying finish 100p and upwards, feeding cows attracting plenty of interest and Mature Bulls a very good trade. Mature bulls headed by a 1245kg Limousing bull from JC Marshall which made 119.5p or £1524 when weighed at 1245kg.

Prime Sheep

A smaller show this week resulted in sharper trade and a strong overall average of £110 or 261p. Gerald and Jonathan Beresford of Hellifield led the sale at 304p/kg for a nice Texel x lamb purchased by Edwards Farm Butchers of Padiham.

Good numbers forward for the Hogg section, and meated types gaining the premium they deserve, but anything short of meat is understandably less money than the good stuff. Best Hoggs up around 280p/kg from Henry Atkinson, Anthony Thompson and K Saffrey. Nick Capstick topped the shop at £125 per head purchased by Nick Dalby. Commercial hoggs if meated sold away to a similar trade on the week.

613 Breeding Sheep (comprising 228 Sheep with 385 lambs at foot)

A very similar entry to last week and trade fairly similar as well. More young sheep with lambs beginning to come forward now and offering good choice to farmers who want to increase find sheep to include in their flocks. Top of the shop this week was John Atkinson who sold a pair of Texel Ewes with 3 Beltex cross lambs for £240 the outfit.

What felt like a hard sell today turned out well on paper for what was on offer, the British Blue section witnessed a healthy average of £383.3 with Fred Houseman topping at £400 with Brian Wellock and Richard Shuttleworth chasing him at £390 and £385 respectively for genuine 6 week old calves with plenty past £350, with heifers up to £350 from the houseman family again. In the black and white section Wrights of Airton topped with some strong Holstein bred calves at £135.
