Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A good quality entry received an improving trade with the top price p/kg a Limousin heifer weighing 555kg from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which sold to George Cropper of Sandersons Butchers of Baxenden for 259.5p/kg or £1420. Top gross was also the leading p/kg steer at 254.5p/kg a Limousin cross which returned £1476 for Mesrs F&B Smith of Westhouse when selling to Alan Beecroft of Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster. Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton bought the next highest grossing animal a 580kg homebred British Blue steer from Mesrs S&P Scriven of elslack for £1447 or 249.5p/kg. Close behind was yet another high class heifer, the leading priced heifer from Mesrs Kitching which sold to Robertshaws farm Shop in Thornton for £1443 or 238.5p/kg. 12 of the 18 Continental cattle in today’s sale made £1300 or above.

3,974 Prime Sheep comprising 3502 Prime Lamb, 457 Cast Ewes & 15 Rams

Another sharp trade today, 3502 lambs sold to an SQQ of 190.5p and an overall selling average of 187.4p, a rise of 1p on the week. A varied selection of lambs forward, including a higher proportion of Mule, Horned and hill bred lambs as producers respond to the stronger trade out in the live marts. The smartest end were a great trade, three pens over £3 per kilo, and a long list of lots 250p plus, many more of this type of lamb is required week in week out with buyers keen, speak to Ted for more details. James Garth and Son from Keasden, Clapham had one of the best runs of lambs today, topping the sale at 317.9p/kg with 39kg Beltex at £124 each selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Garth sold further pens at 310p (40kg £124) 300p (40kg £120) 273.2p (41kg £112) 268.3p (41kg £110). DW&CJ Towler from Grindleton, Clitheroe sold Beltex to 309.5p (37kg at £114.50), PR Simpson, Bolton by Bowland, Clitheroe was up at 297.6p (42kg £125) and these were the top price per head on the day purchased by Hartshead Meat Co, Messrs Simpson also sold at 273.7p (38kg £104). JS Eddleston, Great Harwood, Blackburn was another with a run of smart lambs to 283.3p (43kg £119) 271.4p (42kg £114). JJ Garnett, Draughton, Skipton 276.3p (38kg £105). S&P Scrivin, Elslack, Skipton 273.7p (38kg £104). A&K Kiernan, St Michaels, Preston 265.9p (41kg £109) Brian Lund form Hebden Bridge also made 265.9p (38kg £101). Other higher priced butchers lambs included Ian Lancaster, Clitheroe with 54kg Beltex at £120, 56kg at £118, D&J Carlisle, Cracoe 48kg at £115 and E&M Townley, Clapham 44kg at £110. The Beltex lambs averaged a fantastic 238p/kg today highlighting the strength of the trade for this class of lambs.
Heavier lambs were a shade dearer on the week, with lambs 50kg plus mainly in the £90’s, nice sorts £100 plus. Nice prime handy weights were over £2, whilst a commercial bred type was around 190p.
Hill bred sheep were dearer on the week, good Mules nicely in the £80’s, FA Holmes and Son, Castley, Otley 50kg £84, 47kg £82.50, G&MA Lawn & Son, Skipton 45kg £81, JK Wilson, Blubberhouses 50kg £84.50 and 47kg £84, JH Throup, Silsden 46kg £82, PL Metcalfe Otterburn 45kg £79.50, JA &JC Throup Silsden 45kg £79, FG Throup Silsden 52kg £83.50, AJ Taylor Skipton 46kg £82 and £81.50, Paul Baines Middop 49kg £85 and 46kg £82.50, JA&JH Hewetson 46kg £82. Tops came from J&C Wright of Airton at £90.
A larger show of cast sheep were easier to sell, with stronger meated types in nice demand. Top price of £140.50 for a strong Texel from Haddon Farms, Meltham, Huddersfield. 450 Ewes averaged £66.01.

Calves meeting a very respectable trade today for the goods on offer.

More Calves are required on a weekly basis. All calves just trading similar to past weeks with quality getting away the best in comparison. Bulls still selling better than Heifer Calves which get away at a price.

14 Black and Whites on offer topping at £85 from R.L Wright. An overall British Blue Bull average of £275 with a top price of £310 with only 8 on offer. More required with buyers here on a weekly basis for numbers!
